Quest 2 battery question
«
on:
April 22, 2025, 07:45:59 PM »
Just had my quest 2 headset shut down stating it had a low battery..
I got that message during BOB and just ignored it and nothing happened..this time it killed vr and sent me to the desktop
I am using a USB 3 to to USB C Syntech cable from the laptop to the headset but I heard that cable doesn't charge the headset..
Is there a cable that I can use that charges the headset besides the official $80 cable from Oculus?
thanks!

Not sure the laptop would be able to charge it I agree. I plug mine into the wall (power strip) but use Airlink for actual connection. Even with the headset plugged in it still drains faster than it will charge I believe.
Could always buy a battery pack that'll add a few hours to your usage each session, I bought one for maybe $50-60.

I dont remember which cable I bought, I dont think it was from Oculus, but I didnt cheap out. Did some research for a good one that works with out issue. When I plugged my headset into my new computer it had been unplugged a few days and I was surprised it charged in like 20 minutes. My old computer it took much longer.
Not all USB 3.0 are the same. My headset is plugged into a 10 GB USB 3.0 instead of an old 5gb USB 3.0 Maybe it gets more power or less interrupts to charge faster. but it does charge very quick.

There can be several types of USB ports in a computer in regard of charging devices.Traditionally a USB port (or a bunch of them) would have an output of 5V and 0.5W. Current USB-C connection can provide even 100W and 5-20V! Some USB ports are also designed to continue charging when the device is shut down.
High wattage on the charger isn't sufficient alone, the device has to support fast charging as well. RTFM.

Can I use a usb 3 to usb c adapter and plug it into the usb c port on the laptop instead of using a usb 3 port?
Is it the port or the cable or both?
Thanks for the info!

If you mean for charging, a USB 3 port won't become a powerful USB C charger by changing the cable. Not even all USB C ports deliver the same wattage.

Search for these on Amazon: INIU Oculus Link Cable with Charging
There are a few different brands, make sure you thoroughly check the specs. I've been shopping for such a cable, some a 2.5Gbps, some are 5Gbps, some say they won't charge a Quest 3.

Mine chargeson the $10 cables I have while playing. It does seem like one of my computers doesn't charge fast enought to keep up but the charge goes down very slowly over hours. The other computer keeps it at 100% with the same $10 cable so I'm not sure that its the cable that makes a difference.

Depends on your ports, USB2 charge at 500ma, USB3 charges at 900ma. There also seems to be some weird relationship between speed vs charging rate, more speed seems to lower charging.
