Pimax Crystal light
« on: October 25, 2025, 01:30:16 PM »
I found an older post that was very helpful on the crystal light in AH.  My G2 died.

Is crystal light from pimax still aa good choice for AH?  Lot of bad press from about a year ago.

I do Iracing and AH.

I use a crystal light now and love it...thanks to SNO who told me about it..

Started with a HTC vive pro original and use a quest 2 when we are remote at the in-laws ...

The crystal light blows them both away in clarity resolution and comfort

Be sure to get the audio upgrade as the default ear pieces aren't good at all..

I do Iracing and AH.

I went from the G2 to the Pimax OG Crystal (same optical engine as the Crystal light only with eye-tracking) a couple years ago and flew some sessions in AH with it.  Comparing the two I found the Crystal to be clearer, has a bigger sweet spot, less glare, and better contrast (night actually looks like night and not just a gray/black).  It is really the cheapest upgrade/replacement to the G2.

I think the Pimax takes a little more tweaking than the G2 to get the most from it, but it is a very nice improvement.

Over the last year Pimax has done A LOT to improve customer service and quality control.  I have several friends that also went to the Crystal from the G2 and everyone of them felt it was worth it.

I would also suggest getting the free Mbucchia quadviews addon.  Even though the Light and G2 do not have eye tracking, the quadviews gives you the highest resolution in the sweet spot and down grades the resolution in your peripheral.  The end result is no noticeable degradation of clarity, but a boost in computer VR performance of 20% to 40%.

Hope this helps.

I'm running the crystal super and love it. I don't know about the light but the super took a bit of settings tweaking to get it running smoothly, but there's lots of videos out there on what to set.

I would say the tracking is not as good as the g2. With my G2 I would set my head position when I logged on and never have to reset it. I have to reset about once every half hour with my super. Not a deal breaker by any means for me.

I'm not using the mbucchia quadviews, just the pimax version. Seems to work well but I have a pretty high end machine. I'll have to check it out.

Thank you all for the replies.   Reading reviews in iracing match your reviews in AH.

The Quest 3 is very good from what I have read and heard from my teammate mustng2.  Quest 3 is probably the most used VR in simulation games. The Crystal Light just offers the next level up which is better in iracing.

I was waiting on the BSB2 but the facial heat was  a bit too much to overcome in my opinion  based on other reviews.  With a base station added on  the price is just  a bit much.

I think the new Samsung has small fans built if I remember right.

Well, now you guys have done it!  I’m about to pull the trigger on a Crystal Light.  Researching this afternoon, discovered Pimax will offer a $100 digital trade in on my G2 by sending a picture of the S/N (they don’t want the G2 sent to them).  Need to get more up to speed on the extras that are considered a must have.

What is the “ Mbucchia quadviews addon” about?

A good review here.  The second review is more aligned with to iracing but still a good review.

Quadviews is a way to give you more performance in VR.  Your eyes have a relatively small focus area compared to your entire field of view.  So in VR why spend computing resources making the entire field of view clear when your eyes are only using a small part of it?  Quadviews makes your video card devote its resources to the area of focus and the peripheral field of view is rendered at a lower resolution.

For instance, my quadviews sets my focus resolution to 200% while the rest of the field of view is rendered at 20% resolution.

When tuned correctly, quadviews will give you 30%-40% more performance with an increase in visual clarity.

This also works for VR headsets without eye-tracking such as the G2 or Crystal Light.  The "sweet spot" is rendered at high resolution and peripheral at a lower amount.

Pimax has a quadviews setting, but it is still a work in progress and does not provide as much performance benefit as Mbucchias.

Hope this helps.

I wonder, would software be able to adjust for the need of corrective lens in VR?

I wonder, would software be able to adjust for the need of corrective lens in VR?

You buy those separately using your current eye glass prescription on most VRs.  Check the VR before you buy.  It attaches to the VR lense so it can be updated if your prescription changes.  Some VRs have enough room to be able to wear some  glass frames but not all.

I recently had cataract surgery on one eye which gave me near 20-20 vision in that eye.  I took out that attached prescription lenes for that one eye.

BTW if you have a low-moderate PC you might be better off with a quest 3.

I think that would be awesome!

I get my eyes checked each year and sometimes there is enough change that I need new lens. Im not going to get the inserts everytime I get my eyes checked. If I could tweak the software to adjust the screens to my eye site would be great.
