It really hurts the game when you have to dump the eye candy to get an advantage.  I have heard so many say "Oh, here come the dark.  I need to ram up the gamma."  I have heard others say they turn graphics as low as they can to see GVs better.

I appreciate the thought, but gaming the game with graphic settings hurts the game.  Many of the "That guys is a hack." comes from graphics settings that are perfectly legal.

IMHO Anti-Aliasing is not eye candy. Actually, it can be considered to be quite the opposite! Photo editing programs have several tools to hide imperfections in images. This Photoshop effects guide lists 10 types of blur and 5 types of noise, all of which are some sort of AA. Also note that the imperfections in this case are caused by inadequate hardware at the players' end. If we all had 4K monitors with a pixel size too small to be seen, there would be no use for AA. However, in this incomplete world there's many who can't afford such gear. Image softening filters are a means to make things look good on lower end systems.

FSO last night I was able to see enemy dots at 10K away. There is no dar in FSO and ICON range is 3K.

I don't think it is gaming the game to find the best settings to play the game.
