There's another site that covers the event.  It said that the two Bettys were to fly southeast to le Shima island, the most direct rout, but the pilots knew that few jap zeros were sent to intercept the two bombers and shot them down.   The Betty pilot got smart by flying a longer rout heading northeast instead.
