Bf 109K-4 Günther Landt Jg 53

Bf 109K-4 of 11./Jg 53 flown by Günther Landt. Aircraft was photographed Feb. 22, 1945 in Kirrlach, Germany. Landt was very successful in the K-4, scoring at least 7 victories in the type - mostly against P-47's. This scheme features unpainted panels under the wings.

As for the wings, it comes down to the fact that manufacture of sub-assemblies was outsourced to many contractors. Parts needed to built and shipped out as fast as possible and I also expect that scarcity of the standard RLM 65 (light blue) paint played as part as well. Save time and material by only painting the outer panels.

As for the marking, I can only assume that the aircraft came from another Staffel in the Gruppe, so the previous "2" was probably the wrong color for 11 Staffel planes, so it was over painted and replaced with "yellow 1"

All-black lower wing markings, same story?

Yes. It all comes down to speedy production. Markings became increasingly more simplistic as the war progressed.


Usually with later war planes the simplified under wing marking were the type 4 in the chart. But since I have begun looking into skinning K-4's I've been seeing many with a simple single black cross.
