Ship radar and the Enemy Battle Group
« on: March 04, 2017, 11:23:19 AM »
With the anticipation of the BB’s coming to AH it would be great if changes were made to the radar system also.
When the Enemy Battle Group is within radar range it should show up on the map. Also the heading and range should be passed down to the fire control information in the gun modes. The radar reaches out much further than the views we have with the haze. The haze limits the view distance to about 17k or 9 miles using the 8in guns that have a range of 34k or 19 miles.

Radar range of the US Navy Mark8 radar on Battleships 1942-43 was 40k or 23 miles with a Range Accuracy of 15 yards.
This information is all listed here:  http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_Radar_WWII.php

The system could run similar to land mode when the Enemy fleet is radar located on the map ranging could be possible in a radar ranging mode to get you close. The way it is now you have to see it to hit it.

I know this is primarily a Combat Flight Sim but since the ships are there expanding their ability would enhance the experience using them.

+1   If we can't get a real rangefinder, then radar would be a good alternate.

Sorry, AH ships use stealth technology that makes them invisible to radar.    :devil

I would say limit it to only when a person is in the guns of the ship...if a gun is active and a enemy fleet is within dar range then it pops up on radar. If it pops up whenever it's in radar I feel like we are taking a risk removing CV fights before they have a chance to fight.

The advantage of CVs are range attacks. Stay away from enemy radar. A captain would be drawn and quartered for parking a CV 2 miles from active enemy territory.

I'd agree that's what it would be like IRL but in AH with the auto calibration of bomb sights Carriers need more of the surprise element than they did IRL.

Also the OP suggests from ship radar....which you don't know where it is so it's unavoidable unless you constantly scout the Carriers course.

I'd love that too - implement that on the BB so that the guy up on the platform can call out the range and the fall of shot from the big guns.

Not really how it works.  ;)

Understand that but we are trying to live within the limits of the game.  Just having the guy up on the rangefinder click a button and send you exact range and angle for your guns means you are just a robot pulling the trigger for him.  What is the fun in that?

Each turret actually has one.
