Windows Creators Update
« on: March 15, 2017, 10:37:41 AM »
I just checked, they are running the ads as of today, but it is not quite ready yet. From the hype on the boards it sounds like a review of privacy settings will be required prior to receiving the update.

If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

The rollout is supposed to be in measured steps (not everyone at once), which will only serve to prolong the period of agony I think.

If you go to the Advanced options area of Windows Update there should now be a "Defer feature updates" option. I'm going to recommend this as the way to go, because Microsoft has been known lately to rush the gun with these rollouts and without fully fixing problems that have been reported. You can "Defer" for up to four months.

Here it comes! The patch to default privacy settings came out early this morning, as well as Office patches and a few other things (cumulative adjustments). You can expect to see the Creators Update go out too, though it's anyone's guess as to when any one person receives it.

You can rush the update delivery by visiting this page and installing the Update Assistant (although why you would do that escapes me):

Read several places that if you use the update assistant today, Windows is changing your privacy settings without prompts/asking, make sure you check that out if you do update "early".

The privacy "update" comes through first and has to be in place before the Creators Update will install (or so the plan is).

My father's system that never would update since Windows 10 first came out has updated 'finally.' When the Creator's Update installed it has new privacy (telemetry) choices for the user. The other choices I was aware of from the insider program, so not too many surprises.

Edge is looking better, but if you import bookmarks from IE you may be disappointed. Some links just don't work anymore (not sure why), but the biggest problem for my father was the jumbled mess Edge makes of them. Several sub-folders were merged into one without warning or reasoning from what he reported.

I had run the update from the assistant site, restored his IE, and then copied his bookmarks so that he could get adjusted to the new browser before moving completely away from IE. Then I left him to it, but it wasn't ten minutes before my phone was ringing for a rescue (nothing tragic). MS has eliminated several apps like the CPU-Z, and a few anti-malware repair programs (that haven't been used in quite a while) and so you can expect things to disappear from your desktop (IE included).

I'll let him be the guinea pig for a few days before I even consider it. You can defer the update for up to four months if need be.
