Numbers are great for navigation tasks but we don't really have need of that in AH. For formation flying a tool that allows guys to visually correlate "Snap right, 210 heading" with the arrow pointing 30 degrees left of south would quickly build their SA level with regards to compass headings.
In the real world, you "know" where north is because you know what time of day it is and the sun position and your brain automatically calculates direction from shadows and the movement of shadows as you maneuver. It feels instinctive. In AH, the time is always different than what our internal clock tells us it is and it is always changes at a rate that is foreign to us so that instinct is totally shot to hell. (That's my argument for high noon all the time)
My personal preference for a quick compass would be a simple arrow that shows your nose position with north always being up. If that was combined with a data block it would perfect. I can do without a circle.
