BB enhancement request
« on: April 07, 2017, 11:02:53 AM »
With the new long range 16" guns, would like to request range finders for Destroyers, Cruisers, and Battleships.

Not expecting anything fancy, but it would be nice.  I would also expect that to get a range, you should calibrate the finder to get the range (+/- 50 yards) as the firing is also +/- 200 yards.  It is strictly for naval battles in SEA mode - not land based where can just click on the map.

If you were the only gunner aboard, you would be in your own private Idaho.  :D

Hitech just pointed out in another thread that there is a range-finding mill site when in the ship guns. While I recall what he's talking about, I had no idea it could be used as a range-finder. Hoping someone posts a tutorial on how to use it. It's not intuitive to me.

I'd prefer it if all a ship's primary armament was slaved to a single player in a gunnery director. This is how it was done in real life, with each shell in a full salvo fired at a slightly different range it was possible to count the splashes landing between the ships and estimate the range. I think having fewer players tied up in guns would be good for the game too.

Heck, it was even simpler than that. They had bino rangefinders (the fire control team) at first - and then mid-war the US navy deployed the Ford Mark fire control computer which was actually a really good design that still influences modern radar-based range finders today.  (Being ex-army comms and electronic - I kinda know these systems and as a hobby today).

And it was available mid-war. No reason not to have the fire control computer with it's built in range finder on the Iowa, or Fletcher class destroyers we have in-game. I even think I see their components in the structures of both ships.

Get the length of each ship from wikipedia. Then calculate it's length in Mils at ranges from say 5000yds to 20,000yds where Hitech's haze makes it impossible to see the ships. If you hit H to disable the mouse, you can use fine increments of adjustment with the A, D, W, Z keys.

This is in meters but, is the formula to create your table for the 80Mil range cross hairs when you are in land or sea mode. I use it in making historic gunsights. Most of wikipedia gives US NAVY ship dimension in meters from what I've seen, and if not, just convert to meters. The yellow hash bar makes a range finder kind of silly in sea mode while allowing more than just one player to enjoy ship to ship gunnery if that is what they pay their $14.95 for.

Meant to ask someone about the yellow hash bar in sea mode. What is it for, and how is it used? Do I understand correctly that the formula you state works using either the target height + vertical mil-bar, or target length + horizontal mil-bar? Thanks.

If you push the yellow has bar out until it lines up against the ship you want to shoot at while in full zoom. Then look at the bottom horizontal line and the center line that drops below it. You will slide some area of that under the water line of your ship, then pull lead out ahead for range. Then make micro adjustments as you range with salvos watching the impacts.

Example: Cruiser at 18k, steaming 90 degrees, lead by about one full cruiser length past the end of the hash bar to drop 8inch rounds in the center of the cruiser.
Example: Cruiser at 18k, steaming 30 degress away from you, lead by about 5Mil-8Mil on the hash bar in front of the cruiser's angle of travel.

No different than using the 100mph principle and a 100Mil ring to determine deflection in a fighter. Just way more time involved to get your results.

Bustr: Thanks for the info. I'll have to play with that, and see if I can get the hang of it. Appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I think having fewer players tied up in guns would be good for the game too.

If I wanted to jump in a gun and help out, but couldn't because another player is already sitting in that position, I'd be bummed out. If he was sitting there doing nothing but preventing someone from using ANY of the guns on the boat, I'd be pissed.

Is your point perhaps to force players to fly airplanes? If so, maybe you should just wish for Hitech to do away with mannable guns altogether.

:headscratch:  though...I'll have to have two sets of tables - one for top of main structure and other for top of arrays...depending on how close and current visibility conditions.

Does this appear 'reasonable' for heights?

Personally, I'll be using the structure distances :D
