It seems TV and radio has caught the lame.
« on: April 19, 2017, 11:37:25 PM »
Has anybody noticed the bizarre buzzing/ringing sound in the background of most broadcasts today?

I first noticed it during nascar races on cable in 2006, then in 2011 on regular television, and now it's showed up on broadcast FM radio.

The only way to describe it is that it sounds like someone is flying gas engine model plane about half a block away as you listen/watch.

Initially, in 2006 it was accompanied by a quick series of "dial tone" type sounds every few seconds but those have gotten pretty rare.

It's so bad on some radio stations that any time you hear applause or drums, it has the sound incorporated.

I'm guessing that it's compression artifacts and that the radio stations are now using internet to get the audio to the transmitter which adds the lameness.

Strangely, very few topics on the internet........always the same ground fault/interference claims addressed (it's not) which makes me believe that most people are simply incapable of hearing it.

I would not worry about those noises, it's only the subliminal advertisements and political messages the guys with tin foil hats are trying to avoid.

But now that you revealed the big secret to the public you may want to be on the lookout for silent, black choppers.

Sorry dude.....not a conspiracy............just pathetic results from bad choices by our radio and tv stations.

I guess you're one of "those who can't hear it".

I will send Roddy Piper over to bring you your headphones.

I'm sure it's just artifacts from digital compression. Much like listening to an Mp3 with too low a bit rate.

Remember those horns everybody had at the world cup soccer games a few years ago?

It sounds kind of like them or when you're listening to only the input from a mic'd snare drum......almost as if you're sampling the sound through it.

I'll try to upload a sample from a local radio station that clearly has the sound.

You remember the Simon and Garfunkle song "The Sounds of Silence" ?  This is sort of like what you are hearing but it's actually the "Sounds of Senility".  Enjoy it while it lasts because as soon as the sound stops it means you have died.

Kid you're too young for that to be happening. Best take care from now on to minimize the damage. I have tinnitus pretty bad, myself, and and it sucks. But, I'm 65 (almost) so it's to be expected.
