Can I add maps to E6B?
« on: April 29, 2017, 12:36:49 AM »
For some reason on tonight's map I don't have a map for the medium airfields, my squadmates do. Is there a way for me to download one?

Hi ML52,

The E6B is just a flight computer function of the clipboard and doesn't have maps.

The clipboard itself does support field maps though-- you can right click on the terrain map of the clipboard and select "Clipboard Maps" from the pop up window. Here you should be able to chose from any of the map files found in your "maps" subfolder of your Aces High III installation folder.

If the map you want is not listed, instructions on adding maps can be found in the Help section of Aces High's website here:

http://www.hitechcreations.com/42-hitech-creations/affiliates/142-aces-high-help-field-maps

I use 8thJinx's clipboard maps - he's created a set of very well done and useful maps for both bases and strat targets (I think the troop facility is still missing though).  I liked his work so much I created a Target Hardness Chart in the same style and put it in as a clipboard map too, so I can have an in-flight reference for how much bomb tonnage is required to take out a specific target.  Here are the field maps I use, starting with the Medium Airfield:

And here are his strat target maps:

Refinery

Radar Factory

HQ

City

Ammo Factory

AA Factory

And lastly my Target Hardness Chart

Hope this helps, <S>

EDIT: Bummer, I just noticed Imgur changed all these bmp files I uploaded to type .png.   You'll have to use an image editing program (MS Paint will work) to open them and then save them as bitmap files (.bmp) files before you can add them as clipboard maps...

Thank you Oboe. I meant the clipboard, guess asking about the E6B was a senior moment.

No worries, ML52.  I'm having more and more of those myself.

Were those the maps you're looking for?   I think they might come with the AH3 download now but not sure; I was using them in beta.   If you have any trouble converting to bmp files,
pm me your email address and I'll send whichever ones you want or directly as bmps from my install.

btw, I *think* if you add a new map to the clipboard field maps, you have to do it once for each terrain to make it available in that terrain.

I have a question?    Does anyone know the grid size on those clipboard maps?

The reason I ask is because another player was asking about this and I didnt have the answer nor could I find it. I'm pretty sure Jinx did these maps but havent seen him around to ask him personally.

The scale may not really be correct with those grids. Many of those maps are for objects in the terrain editor that are 1x1mile square objects.

I went and looked at my terrain for the size of the objects in the maps.

HQ - 1x1 mile
City - core for bombing 2x2 mile, object 4x4.
AA - 1x1
Ammo - 1x1
Rdr - 1x1
Trp - 1x1
Fuel - 2x2
Super Large Airfield - core with field - 2x2, overall object with attached town 4x4.
Large GV base - 2x2
Medium GV base - 1x1
Small GV base - 50ydsx50yds
Large\medium\small airfield - 1x1
Town - 1x1
Port - 1x1

CV and BB task groups are laid out roughly inside of a 1x1 area.

That fits pretty closely to what I found testing yesterday.  I ran a Panzer at 25 mph the length of the small field's steel mat runway, and it took 121 secs, which works out to 4803 ft.   In the terrain editor I loaded a small field object today and noted the difference in the x pos of the cursor at one end of this runway to the other - the difference was 4839, which I assume is in feet.

So the grid is 1 mi x 1 mi, and each grid square is 1,056 ft per side.

I can't remember how the town chart works - I had 8thJinx explain it to my once but I guess it didn't stick.

It has something to do with the 8 gun positions in each town, and how they are different between towns associated with Small, Medium, and Large fields.  But I can't remember what data in the chart stands for.
