Proud dad needs advice
« on: June 15, 2017, 05:12:23 PM »
My son has been on honor roll for the past 3 years so he has earned a new computer... of course he wants a laptop...thinking that he is old enough for the game I wanted to get a laptop that can run the game well. Does anyone know if a laptop with this Card(
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 with 4GB GDDR5) will work?
The rest of the system is:
intel i5 7300HQ
Memory 8gig

Yup but will usually make for a heavy laptop/low battery life.

That should run most modern games at a decent FPS. It will as Vulcan stated suck the juice fast while gaming though.

Make sure it can properly cool the hardware.

Dedicated gaming laptops will come with better cooling then standard issue models with specs. That also means they are thicker and harder to carry around.

They last longer as well (theoretically).

I play on an MSI GP70 2QF Leopard Pro 17.3" Intel Core i7 4th Gen 4720HQ (2.60 GHz) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M 8 GB Memory 1 TB HDD.

A little over a year old and no problems. 60 fps at middle to high settings.

A couple of observations:

The 'M' suffix video cards are NOT equal to the desktop versions with the same number.

The laptop throws off a lot of heat. I keep a lap desk underneath it to keep my legs from cooking.

I run the GTX 1060 and have had no issues.  As far as the battery life goes, just leave it plugged in.

Yep just leave the laptop plugged in. A 1050 card should run AH good.

I agree on both the capability and power/cooling cautions. Congrats!

A simple hint for cooling: Attach a pair of 3/8" (1 cm) bumpons on the hinge side of the bottom for extra airflow.
