I think it would be very beneficial to have this. A lot of players do not look at the boards. The board is really the only place for people to find out about special events. Advertising them on a weekly basis in game might bring a lot more players who are unaware of these events. I think it would help build up these events and allow players to plan more accordingly. Might get much bigger turn outs and more people interested in other parts of the game.

Not to take away from what Violator posted, but I think it would much more beneficial if the news/events/ect. were added to the launcher, kind of how other games have it setup. You open the launchers, you can see some tid bits about upcoming and current events and what not. Having it on the launcher would be better than the arena message as you can only see the arena message if you log into the Melee Arena. If it's on the launcher, everyone sees it, including those that are playing in the free arenas. This might add incentive to pay to be able to fly in the events.

How about with some option where you can check set an o game alarm clock for events youre interested in?
