I would guess that the pilot decided to retract the gear to prevent the bird from flipping over on touch down given that he knew he was going to land in a farm field.

Dave you DO understand that just because you turn off the engine that the prop still rotates due to the passage of a lot of air at over 100 MPH airspeed. Unless the engine seizes or something else prevents it from turning it continues to do so.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Most likely that he wisely retracted the gear because of the unknown state of of the ground.  Way better on the belly than on the back.

You are correct.  Even shut down, the prop will continue to windmill.  This pilot did a great job with not much time to decide.  Well done!

Dave, the Mustang emergency procedures say nothing about keeping the engine running.  There's no benefit to it and doing so could only create more problems.

Yep.  My post wasn't serious at all.  Every time a plane crashes people always critique the pilot.  That's why I said I couldn't resist.
Currently ignoring Vraciu as he is a whoopeeed retard.

Yeah, not sure what it takes to make the embedded u-tube videos work.  It looks like he didn't have much distance or time to make a decision at all ... maybe 2-3 seconds from "gonna put her down easily just over there"  to  "sheit, I'm not gonna make it mate - there - I'll put it in the field!"

Toad, there is an option in each users profile which controls how Youtube videos are shown.  Look in the "Look and Layout" section of your profile.  The name of the option is "Show YouTube videos as a link.".  That has to be unchecked for Youtube videos to show up as embedded.

Once that is unchecked, then the Youtube link has to be wrapped with the youtube tags.

Skuzzy, thanks for the help but I'm not clear on this.

First you said: "That has to be unchecked for Youtube videos to show up as embedded."

Then you said: "Once that is checked, then the Youtube link has to be wrapped with the youtube tags."

So do I want it checked or unchecked and THEN use the x {/youtube} wrap?

Yeah, I didn't use the bracket deliberately. Otherwise it says bad youtube link or something.

BTW, I tried it both ways, checked and unchecked. Nada. Unchecked I get the link. Checked I get a blank post.

It works with this:

<-- note I'm getting the link from right clicking on the youtube video and selecting "copy video url" then pasting between the [yout...][/yout...] tags.

OOps, typo Toad.

Uncheck the option.  Also note, you have to get the URL as Brooke said.

Ok, thanks gentlemen.

I see the problem.

The link I posted is      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8dHKwkLNnI

Brooke's link does not have the watch?v=

I got that link in an email instead of right clicking the youtube page.

He likely left the gear up or retracted it at engine failure to ensure he made the field.

Landing gear down in a housing community is far worse than making the field and running out of time to get gear down and locked.

I did this all the time in game in addition to getting prop best for gliding in the game.

You can also get a small reduction in drag over the best prop setting by getting it stopped but you have to go so unbelievably slow in game to get it stopped that you likely won't get it the first try.

If you're at 30k and almost out of fuel, you can try it a couple of times before you run out and extend your glide by a bit.
