PC Lockup
« on: July 15, 2017, 07:23:05 PM »
It happens in other games from time to time but it seems to happen in AH more often. It seems random to me but my PC freezes to the point that the only way to fix it is to turn it off manually. I'm starting to think that it has something to do with windows 10 checking for updates. The time stamp on when it last checked for an update and when the PC froze seem to be pretty close together. Any suggestions on a fix?

A DXDIAG output might be helpful.

^this.

Also, if your suspect about windows update is correct, you can make windows look for updates manually before starting a game. I do that with my anti-virus, the rest I have set to manual update.
Quote from: BaldEagl, applies to myself, too
I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

how much of the report do you need?

The top third is usually enough. Up to and including <SOUND DEVICES>

First, have you downloaded and installed the video drivers from Nvidia or are they provided by Windows? In case of the latter, do the former.

Second, you have three separate sound cards. Disable in the Device Manager and then uninstall the drivers for at least the Nvidia HDMI sound device. If you only use your headphones, you might want to do the same for the Realtek Motherboard Audio, which you can disable in the UEFI/BIOS.

Also check for updates in the Alienware support site. There's a new BIOS version available, check the description of it and update if it clearly seems to solve your issues.

If your computer came with Win7 installed and got upgraded to 10, reinstall all of the drivers. A clean Windows install would be the best option, but people may prefer to do otherwise, a decision I've learned to accept.

Sorry about the bump but I'm still having this issue.  I've done everything Bizman pointed out, and I thought it helped at first but it happened again today.  Another observation; it seems like the longer the PC has been running, the more likely it is to happen.  Also, once it happens, it seems to happen more frequently.  It only happens when gaming or watching a video or something of that like.

do you need another dixdag?

Heat issue maybe,no wizard...but have seen it happen :uhoh GTx770 is fairly old card. My computer from that era over heated just running window 10, well not really but sure felt like it. Couldnt hardly run any sort of upper class games...just lockdown. No CNTR ALT DEL...nothing but cut off power. To keep it from happening 10 min later, was like wep in AH, 2 min off for 1 min running a game :uhoh

1stpar3 has a good point there. If the CPU overheats, it will slow down to the point of not apparently responding.

What type is your processor cooler? More importantly, how is it attached to the motherboard? If it's the plastic split prongs, they're prone to get loose since they are quite finicky to install properly. The cooler should't move at all if it's properly seated. If it's loose, you'd better take it off completely and change the heat paste.

If it's the Intel stock cooler, you may also want to get something a little more powerful. The cost for a decent one is 50 or even less.

Looking at oboes thread my problem seems very similar but I don’t think it’s related to voice or sound. It does seem to happen much more often in the events arenas though.
