Need Training

Hi Guys,

After about 30 hours or so in the game and countless times being shot down I realize I'm in need of fighter training.  Would anyone be available this evening (7/28) around 9:30pm to give me a hand?

I can't seem to figure out the type of fighter I like, good maneuverability or just plain fast.  The only plane I've been even partially successful with is the F6F, I have no clue why though..

Stop into the Training Arena they are there to help. Tonight may be sparse as most of the trainers fly Friday night FSO. If you would like I will make time to work with you. I am not the hottest stick in AH but can hold my own.

Hopefully you have VOX I hate to type.

No FSO tonight.  Frame 3 finished up last week.

The F6F is probably not a great choice to start training with because you can't see well behind you and your situational awareness will be impeded by that.

I suggest you start with a Spit 8 or 9.  The spit has good visibility, speed, climb rate, maneuverability, and firepower.  The Ki-84 is pretty decent as well, but is not so good at taking a beating.

Don't shoot at everything in your sight and don't bother much with snapshots (things moving quickly through your sight) until you improve your gunnery skills.  Save your shots for when you are behind someone no further than 400 yards.  In the hangar, make sure to set your convergence for your guns to 400 yards.

Always keep your head moving around to see what's around you, even when you are close to shooting your prey.  It's better to disengage, than become prey for someone else you weren't paying attention to.  Target fixation is probably the number 1 killer in the MA.

If someone is attacking you, turn into them, but out of their plane of motion.  I.e. if they are upright, you turn sideways, if they are turning sideways into you, you pull up or down.  Don't be predictable in your flight path.  You don't have to be all over the sky, just use a bit of unorthodox choices periodically, e.g. negative G turns, snap rolls, etc.

Don't dive into the middle of a fight.  That's the most dangerous area.  Try to work the edges of a fight and make sure your edge doesn't become the middle.

Keep an eye on your airspeed.  If it's starting to drop below 200, you probably need to think about finding an exit.

The rest is all angles, energy, and geometry. :-)

Lastly, join a squad if you aren't already in one.  Squad mates can do wonders to help keep you alive and teach you more.  (Mild plug - The 364th C-Hawks are recruiting).

The Ki-84 in fact has a considerably tougher structure that a Spitfire - propensity for PWs notwithstanding - but the flaps & throttle work over-complicate ACM for a beginner.

Find another new player to practice with. Learn to fly as a team. It's your best strategy for the melee arena.


Here's a review of what we covered to help you keep the many new things in mind.

Lead pursuit reduces range and sets up crossing shots.

Lag pursuit maintains or increases range and facilitates joining flight paths.

Don't turn without a reason. Don't lose altitude without a reason. Altitude is expensive. Spend energy wisely.

Lead turns rule. Turn first but not too early.

Gunnery is recognizing the correct sight picture. It takes practice to recognize the bandit's range and aspect and remember the correct sight picture for it. Getting closer makes it easier.

Know your aircraft well at minimum and maximum speeds.

Turns require radial g. Available radial g is determined by speed. More speed equals more available g. Speed plus g equals turn rate.

Turn rate and turn radius are both important considerations. A radius advantage is good for a head on merge but if it turns into a tail chase you'll want a turn rate advantage.

Corner speed in AH3 is the slowest speed that allows 6 g. Corner speed provides both best turn rate and smallest no flaps turn radius. Maintaining corner speed requires gravity to assist with thrust in a descending spiral.

Know what speeds and g you can sustain in a flat turn.

Don't flat turn unless you're too slow to go vertical.

Know your minimum entry speed to complete a loop with/without flaps.

You won't hit the target in a BnZ if you can't put the aircraft where it needs to be. Trim for high speed. Remember AOA is a speed control. Setting trim sets AOA for level flight at a particular speed. Setting trim to your max speed makes control easier at max speed.

When you're close to the ground trim for your current speed so you can safely center the stick.

Practice looping with and without stall horn/stall buffet while watching something outside the cockpit.

A hanger flying exercise to appreciate trim: Fly straight up as high as you can until you stall then reverse and fly as fast as you can through a hanger. Continue while gaining altitude with each pass. Trim for max speed so you can be easy on the stick going through the hanger.

I agree Max, say FLS how do you set your trim for "max speed"?

Dive to the desired speed and set auto level or set auto angle while flying level.  Turn off auto pilot mode and your trim settings will stay set for that speed unless you have combat trim on.

If you note the position of the trim indicators in the cockpit you can set them manually for the same speed.

I'll watch some more films and I guess concentrate on one task each time I take off.

Remember pitch for speed, throttle for altitude, when landing. Practice slow flying at landing speed, with flaps and gear down, and controlling descent with the throttle, and landing will get easier. Once you're down and slow enough, pulling the stick back locks the tail wheel.

To watch your films go to the Aces High Film Viewer in the Start menu. You cannot run Aces High and the film viewer at the same time. Any film you didn't name will have a number and date to help you identify it. You can watch the film from any aircraft in the film. You can turn trails on and see the turn circles in the flight paths.  It's a useful tool for understanding what happened in a fight as well as replaying training sessions from different viewpoints.

Think I might go for some of that training, FLS. Also Tracer50, I found that being able to run films at reduced speed, helped to show where my timing was off, as in "lead turns". Seeing when your foe starts his and where you SHOULD have started yours. Can even fine tune it more by watching film from foe's POV. Priceless information  :rock Also, Practice Practice Practice...I still put in about 1 hour a day on the online drones. They do take a few more hits to kill them as they will fly without even wings, but it helps immensely with sight picture muscle memory :aok
