Advice needed on new rig, got a tax rebate coming 😆
« on: August 11, 2017, 09:55:49 AM »
OK guys been away for 12 years (from AH not in jail 😇)
So I'm gonna build a new system to hook up to the 4k 55" Samsung TV.

Not an Intel kinda guy and do like AMD processors and GPU so not loozing for Intel or Nvidia recommends.

Budget is around  $2000 Aussie so that's around £1600 or US $1500.

No interest in fancy lit up led fed cases just bang for buck.

Thinking Ryzen with around 16gb ram  2tb hdd, not worried about ssd for os, more interested in ideas for processor and graphics card.

Fire away

For the video card, get the fastest card on the planet if you want to play at 4K resolution.

If you insist on AMD, then I would suggest you need to wait two more generations if you want to play at 4K resolution.  Maybe by then they will have a quality solution for 4K game play.

Ryzen+Nvidia is a good combo, but as Skuzzy said everyone has been holding their breath for quite a while for AMD to release a decent video card that can compete with Nvidia.

Techboards  test show you do not see the difference between 4k and full HD (1920*1080) if you do not sit VERY close to the TV.

My layman thinking says there's another opinion on this subject. If your monitor is very large, you'll see the difference at normal viewing distance. If you can see the grid so well it disturbs you, you're either too close or the resolution is too low.

It looks like something I'd want to build.         Coupla thoughts:

The cryptocurrency mining craze has affected price and supply of many video cards.  It might be worth it to compare closely the price and performance differences between the 1070 and 1080 - last time I checked the price was so close for some models it was definitely worth it to grab the 1080.

Not sure about the power supply manufacturer, but I'd be tempted to get a Gold rated one from Seasonic in the 550-650 watt range.

Also, Ryzen loves fast memory - I think you might consider looking at the memory Pudgie picked in his Ryzen build - might have been 3200.

Adjuster, you need to check out the AMD Ryzen CPU thread that is a few threads below this one, and follow Pudgie's build

yes a good seasonic 650 watt PSU as obeo posted... and me personally will never bother with another MSI board again, having had 4 to 5 of them fail, due to pour Quality Control

Do more research on this before you pull the Trigger and buy the wrong stuff

hope this helps

TC

edit: Pudgie, if you got time and see this, please help Adjuster out on what he needs for a good quality component build, I personally don't like most of what he has posted on his list for an AMD build, and he did not even include a CPU heatsink/cooler....

The Ryzen comes with a the Wraith cooler I believe.  Its one more price advantage AMD has over Intel CPUs - the are already lower priced plus they come with a decent cooler...

That was just a first edit tbh. I prefer Gigabyte boards, was making sure cpu and GPU combo looked up to par and enough ram. Got a couple of weeks till the taxman begrudgingly gives me $6500 back so my $2k rig will possibly (read almost certainly ) creep over my initial budget.

Gotta love this community, great friendly advice  :D

Perhaps ask around to see if anyone here is running a 4k large/TV size panel with a 1070.  That's a large 4k panel to drive, and a 1070 may not allow you to run max graphics settings and maintain FPS where you wish them.  IE manage your expectations with a mid or low end of the higher end GPUs.  Even a 1080ti @4k on such a large screen is going to be put to work running AH3 at max res and details I would wager.  I'm basing this off my experience with a 28" 4k/Gsync monitor though, I've never run 4k PC games through a 4k TV, again, see if anyone here has done so and what their results were first, before buying/expecting anything with your build.

Already decided on a monitor for most use, big tv just for lazy sofa gaming. Just looking around for a decent monitor, 4k can probably wait a while

My apologies if my post seemed to be harsh with words, Adjuster!

I was just trying to get you some help from someone with experience with the new AM4 Ryzen CPU's

Cheers
