« on: August 13, 2017, 12:04:23 AM »
why does bombers with .050cal guns fire/hit at 1.5ft or yards don't know which it is and fighters that fire .050cal only reach 1000 ft/yds if your a steady shot.

You're not thinking about the closure rate of the bombers Gunner's bullets coming at you as you are flying into them.....think of how fast a. 50 cal. Round travels when it's fired, now think about how fast you are flying towards those rounds being fired...

Hope this helps

When firing forward from fighters and bombers at the same speed then at what distance do the tracers vanish?

This was a discussion many, many years ago.

Yep a few Blue Moons it was....

I posted a link to a PDF file I scanned from a friend's B17 Gunner Training Manual he gave me for fixing his A/C, many years ago...he had some awesome stories of being a tail Gunner in the B17...
Anyhow, that file/link should still work since it is on the Trainer's FTP site...

Been years since I last looked at it but if memory serves me right, the manual calls for opening fire when enemy gets to within 1,200 to 1,000 out..

Between 1.5k & 2.0k yards out

And it works quite well, too.  :D Been many incoming at 6:00 that seemingly startle and dodge when they get hit at that distance.

The key is tracking the target. If the fighter presumes that it is 'sneaking up' on a bomber/bomber flight's six then he's setting himself up for disappointment if the bomber player isn't AFK or Winchester. Now, swooping attacks are harder to defend against and attacks from multiple fighters and directions at the same time are the ultimate challenge. Besides the 1.5k distance from a steady platform being realistic, I'd say it's a fair trade-off.

hgtoniv, There id some validity in that, but only for rearward firing .50, firing deflection should  be less than that, but being positioned to the side or ahead of a bomber still can get you shot at ranges out to 1500 yards.

Probably because .050" is really, really small.     :rofl

It's similar to news stories I've seen about shootings with .9mm handguns.   :D

At this extreme range do you fire with all 3 B-17s or just the primary gun turret your in?  All guns are designed to hit at .5 k convergence so sounds like it would be a waste of ammo using all 3 bombers guns.
