consistency with icons
« on: August 19, 2017, 08:18:52 PM »
This has been asked for many times, by many people but it should be addressed.  Enemy planes can see their wirbletard buddies from 6k out and then run to them for protection, while the guy chasing won't get an icon until 600 yards out.

It is gamey af and should be made fair:  Friendly icons should be no more visible than enemy.
"Then out spake brave Horatius, the Captain of the gate:
To every man upon this earth, death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better, than facing fearful odds.
For the ashes of his fathers and the temples of his Gods."

What about the GV icon on the map? Even if they shorten the in-world icon, they can always run the the map icon.

This stealth ninja icons after the last patches are absolutely annoying, the GVs are practically invisible,a needle in a haystack  {let's not talk about this town resupplying m3s, settings; why fight when you can drive m3 }  . I make  3-4 passes  500ft above on m3 parked in town , in f3 mode A20, and can't see him.

I have an idea.

Leave the icon range as it is for F3 mode and lengthen it for cockpit view.

I think the icons on mini map and in visual range are a representation of friendlies ability to communicate locations.  You are not privy to those communications if you are a bad guy so you rely on a much shorter range of knowing where they are, almost as if you need to see them for yourself to know where they are.  I would be extremely in favor of enemies showing up at longer ranges if another friendly is within that short visual range of the enemy themselves.

We have communications between friendlies.  No need to represent that ability with icons.

One of the original reasons for shortening the enemy GV icon was how easy it was to kill tanks from the air. If you can see a tank icon from 6k away, you can march your lancs right over them and never miss. In an IL2 it meant you could keep your full zoom view on a wirble because of the icon to wait for the turret to be in the wrong direction. Or a jabo could come in with alt, wing over, drop his load and screw the pooch for a GV battle in moments with very little effort. I do have an issue with how the wing shooting ability went up as a result of having to get in really close to see tanks when you wanted to bomb or shoot them. Hitech said changing the icon had nothing to do with helping tanks be their own single shot wirble. It ended up that way for a number of tankers who took advantage of the free gift from Hitech.

I think the icon range was to keep tank players in the game because it was too easy to kill tanks from the air in AH2. Just before the change I was landing 3-5 kills with my IL2 at a time because of the normal range icon helping me setup the kills. And it's pretty obvious when you are getting pulled to a wirble, the guy has to fly at or past a fixed point. This complaint is up there with wanting auto ack removed from feilds so you can get your kills without being rudely interrupted with an HE round.

I like the change that was made, its still extremely easy to see tanks and vehicles that are moving, but if they want to hide under cover of trees, its pretty hard to find them unless you have a good idea of where they stopped.  I'm a big bomb****er though, so whats easy for me may not be for the average guy.

Agree - I don't have a problem with aircraft only having a limited view of ground vehicles, but it needs to apply to friendly vehicles as well.
