Radeon Crimson 17.8.1 ReLive Drivers
« on: August 22, 2017, 01:51:41 PM »
Hi All,

If interested, Radeon users might check out this newest Radeon Crimson driver as from my testing w\ my Fury X graphics card it appears that AMD may have fixed the screen pausing\crashing associated thru their drivers that was affecting the game Grand Theft Auto V.....which was showing to be identical to the same screen pausing\freezing\crashing issues that was occurring in AHIII Dx11 vers. I posted a link to a video by Level1 Techs in another thread that showed this occuring while they were running GTA V game which is using Dx11...which was identical to what I've witnessed while running AHIII Dx11 version game.

I have ran AHIII today after updating to this driver & to date have not witnessed a screen pause occur as of yet.
Will continue to run these to get more feedback data on them to get more verification but it's looking good so far.

The release notes don't list what AMD did specifically to fix this but they did state that they've fixed an intermittent application crash that was happening in GTA V. My hunch is that this issue is the same one that I've noted while playing AHIII Dx11 vers.

I'll post if the screen pausing shows back up but so far it looks good.

Thanks Pudgie.

Weren't the DX11 pauses affecting nVidia card users also?  I can't recall for certain.

Thanks Pudgie.

Weren't the DX11 pauses affecting nVidia card users also?  I can't recall for certain.

Yes it was reported\confirmed to be happening w\ Nvidia cards as well.

Just got done w\ another run in AHIII 3.02 Patch 7 & witnessed no screen pause\freeze occurring using these Crimson 17.8.1 drivers.

The screen pause\freeze sometimes crash is the OS calling for a TDR event due to the graphics card's GPU taking too long (>2 secs) to finish a draw\render call sent to it to perform in which the OS calls the display's miniport driver to call the GPU driver to reset the GPU to start over. If the restart is successful then you will see the pause or freeze, if not then the OS will signal a CTD w\ the GPU driver kernal reporting that it has recovered or not but the game continues to run. The cause for this is what's hard to find as it can be an issue within the game code that the graphics card driver is misinterpreting thru the OS Dx11 API OR an issue within the graphics card driver that is mishandling the game code due to a misinterpreting thru the OS Dx11 API that causes the GPU to hang.

AHIII isn't the only Dx11 coded game client that is affected in this manner....GTA V is another game client that had the very same issue & it may be that AMD has fixed this within their driver stack for GTA V & so far appears to have rectified it for AHIII Dx11 vers as well.

Would be a good thing if AMD would share what they've found & fixed w\ Hitech & Co if this turns out to be truly fixed.

Thanks Pudgie! Installed this driver for my R9-380X, then ran Unigine Valley benchmark at extreme HD 1080p setting. Didn't see one stutter, whereas before it stuttered frequently. FPS went down 1 from 41 to 40, but hey, that's well worth it for stability.
Leave that thing alone!
Relax said the Knight, man, we are programmed to receive.
You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

Well the honeymoon is now officially over as I have witnessed the screen freeze\pause reoccur again.

This happened after I had set up my FuryX card in VSR & set the in-game res to 3840 x 2160 (4K) using fairly high graphics settings which was pushing this Fury X pretty hard.

Gonna turn VSR off, reset the in-game res back to 2560 x 1440 (native res of monitor) then see if I still get them.

Will post w\ results.
