Just Curious Regarding Icon Colors
« on: August 31, 2017, 09:25:01 AM »
Hey all,

What is the back story on why friendly icons are by default green?  NATO standard is friendly units are blue and neutral units are green.  (Yes, I know.  I have already adjusted my GUI colors, so this is not a wish.)

Regards,

This is only a guess, but I think it might go back to Warbirds.    Warbirds was a forerunner of Aces High - basically the same format - countries battling for control of map by capturing airfields using paratroops, 24/7 persistent arena, etc.

Warbirds though, had (has?) four countries - Red, Green, Gold, and Purple.   I think there were complaints about some colors being more visible than others, and this might be why all enemy units show up as a single icon color (defaulted to Red) in AH.  Don't know why Green was chosen as the default friendly, although it is the color opposite of Red I think.  Must be difficult though for people with Red/Green color blindness.  But they did make it user configurable.

Interesting bit about NATO.  I'm not too happy with my Green's visibility against some terrains - I may change friendly icons to Blue...

I have my Squad as blue, and every now and then I have to change the hue because it's not visible on the map.

Also, if I remember correctly, the default for enemy 1 is red and enemy 2 is orange. I changed both to red since to me there's no allies among enemies. Red-Orange-Green, reminds me of traffic lights. I know the middle one is called yellow, but it definitely has more than a shade of orange.

Sir,

Not all things in the services are common sense or obvious.  :lol   I just grew up associating various colors with certain things.

ADRP 1-02 (the old FM 1-02 Operational Terms and Graphics) has the following - document approved for public release, distribution is unlimited:

COLOR (FILL)
3-7. In framed symbols, color provides a redundant clue with regard to standard identity. The fill is the
interior area within a symbol. If color is not used, the fill is transparent. In unframed symbols (equipment),
color is the sole indicator of standard identity, excluding text amplifiers. Blue for friendly or assumed friend,
red for hostile or suspect, green for neutral, and yellow for unknown or pending are the default colors used
to designate standard identity. Affiliation color without the fill may also be used for the frame, main icon,
and modifiers.

I don't currently have access to the Joint Pub, so you'll just have to trust me on it being a NATO standard.

On a side note, we currently depict Afghan units as green.  So, nothing is written in stone.

Regards,

(Yes, I am sure some staff officer somewhere got a medal for coming up with a new acronym for the FM series publications . . . .)

MWL: I was not implying that the spec didn't exist, you asked why not the blue, I had never heard about the spec until today. Hence why it did not enter my consideration 18 years ago when choosing the color.

Sir,

Thanks for the info.  Not trying to change anything was just curious.

Now, off to the arena . . . . :airplane:

Should be a sizzling bacon color for that. Just saying.
