Is there some sort of "pump and dump" business model where the original developers make off with money without being sued?

I see so many drugs pushed hard on tv with questionable side effects only to see the predictable class action suit a short
time later but I'm failing to understand what is going on.

Heh, big pharma aren't known for their scruples.  Look at the big Oxycontin thing - heralded as the "Best new painkiller, most advanced ever created, and NO addiction problems like morphine and others!".  What a giant lie that turned out to be, Oxy - while I believe it can and does help many, even a majority - did spawn a whole new era of opioid addictions in the West, it was certainly first, before Hydro, Fentanyl, and the worst like carfentanyl etc.   Purdue done paid out them some big fines for the "addiction proof" lies.

wait, wait, lawyers are making money suing the companies after the disclaimer was given?  something is wrong here.  and this stuff is covered by insurance?  so, most business involved gets a buck,  some people get red undies, and we all pay for it?  oh man.

I keep about 10 percosets around and they last about 3 years.

When you twist the crap out of your ankle and need to finish a big job or wake up with insane tooth pain while on vacation on christmas day, a single pill get's you past the initial pain often enough that you don't need a second one.

That said, I just can't imagine some of the drugs peddled on TV that have the same side effects as the symptom they are claiming to relieve.

Are these drug companies creating a profitable product and cashing in by selling it before the lawsuits come in or do they actually make enough to hang on to it and endure the settlements?

800mg of ibuprofen has helped when I've had an infected tooth, had my wisdom teeth out, and injured my back.  I think a certain segment of the population (like myself) is very sensitive to the effects.  I find they work as good or better than prescription pain pills.

A pharmaceutical company invests huge dollars developing a drug, and its patent lasts a limited time before the generics take over.  During that period there is intense pressure on the marketing and sales people to recoup the investment and make a profit.  The results are predictable, and, regrettably, repeatable, despite what you would hope were hard-learned lessons.

The safety mechanism in Europe (which, btw, is not famous for developing drugs) is extensive government regulation.  In the U.S., lawyers serve as the predators that keep the herd in check.  Take your pick, you need one or the other.

Pharma companies have more money then god. I work for IT industry and as it stands, they are far more "confortable" then banks. Recently my friend who works for swiss pharma told me a story. He saved 10k $+ costs in the project. Seems like a rational thing to do. When his bosses found out, he got scoleded and told to come up with a team party that would eat all those saving up. There is no cost recouping mentality there. There are no cost controls. They are bathing in cash as our friends and collegues end up homeless and hooked on opioid in name of quarterly profits.
