This plane was responsible for the most tonnage of ships sunk in the Pacific theater. Over 2,000 were built.

I've always loved the Helldiver.   I prefer the original CAF scheme on it with the yellow prop hub.   Oh well.

They finally managed to get some doors for the mains.   Some other group is restoring one and worked out a deal to make an extra set for the Rebels.

According to the CAF, it's sunk the most tonnage not number of ships then any aircraft in the Pacific theater.

It seems like the SBD:s sunk more ships and the SB2c sunk more tonnage. But since im team SDB i say that the difference is that the SBD did the hard work war ships while the Helldiver killed merchant ships.. Not that it really matters. The more plane we get the better, even if i doubt that the Helldiver would be that popular, it still slow (slower than a Brewster) and less maneuverable than the SBD. The cannons and the bomb load makes it more attractive but A F6f or a Hog can carry about the same loadout so they will still be the planes of choice for ground attack sorties from CV:s

Mostly due to teething problems when it was first introduced - nothing out of the ordinary other than there were A LOT of issues when it first became operational. A lot.

That said, once they worked out the bugs, pilots accepted their fate - it's no Dauntless, but it'll do the job.

Years ago I met an old man who flew these birds. He claims he dropped a 1k bomb on a CV, though I can't remember which battle. I had zero reason to not believe him. In Any case, he told me the real nickname for the SB2C, Son of a squeak, 2nd Class. Haha

It was far more capable than the Dauntless overall.   But that came wth some tradeoffs in some areas.   I think the Beast was just a victim of time, technology, tactics, and initial design requirements.
