Beginning in March 1944 25 Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Air Force flew SBD-5 dive bombers from the island of Bouganville in the Solomons. Early sorties were against Japanese troops in the vicinity of their airfield and later on they flew against airfields and other targets on the Japanese fortress of Rabaul. After two months of operations the squadron was withdrawn to re-equip with F4U-1A Corsairs.
