Entry for stupid move of the year award
« on: November 14, 2017, 10:52:49 PM »
So I decided to upgrade my GPU from an HD7870 to a MSI 6GB GTX1060 (short card version) because the HD7870 couldn't really handle shadows.  The swap seemed to go well and performance was about twice as fast.  But I noticed something odd: if I stressed the card with a zoomed view into lots of trees the frame rate would start OK but slowly, over many seconds, decline to even below what the HD7870 could do.  I opened the case to check if the fan was not turning, but I couldn't find the fan!  Then I noticed the fan was covered with a sticker that said Play Hard, Stay Silent and in small lettering "Remove before Gaming".

Worked much better with the fan uncovered.

I'm such a dummy.  (Although, what on Earth is the point behind covering the fan with a sticker when the card is shipped in a sealed bag?)

Sounds a bit like the EVGA 1070 being released without thermal pads to the back plate and a software bug that caused it to over heat without them.

I plugged my GTX 1060 in it ran straight from the box, that’s a first for me :)

I think my odd frame freeze was DX11 :old:

Game runs smoother, I set everything to default :joystick:

My game freezes in DX11 as well.
DX9 is pretty good, although the text in the chat window look a little odd.

DX11 version freezes occasionally for me; I put up with it because it's infrequent and short, and I get a bit better performance with the DX11 version.  I usually run the DX 9 version for FSO and scenarios.

Oh, and I don't consider it a dummy act 715....those things tend to happen more as we gain more experience in life.....   :old:

What a moronic move by the company.

Agreed Brooke - that was a bonehead decision. Why do they need a sticker on the GPU fan? It's not like the fan will spin uncontrollably and take off fingers or cut you up like a knife wielding slicker in a red leather jacket with a white glove on.

My guess is that it was put there by the company to stop the blade from bouncing around/spinning and maybe doing damage to the bearings of the fan motor during shipping.

Yes, that must be the reason. The million hours rotational movement must do less damage than the shakes and bumps caused by careless shipping crew, not to mention the potential of rough sea and bumpy roads during transport! I wonder why there's no such protection for power supply fans which are much larger and thus more prone to gravitational damage.  :old:

You've almost graduated scouser-school*. If you can get all four wheels off a Ford Capri 2.8 in under 60 seconds, stripe any black belt with a Stanley knife and do the sixty yard dash in 9 seconds while holding a VCR you'll get your certificate
