going off map.
« on: November 18, 2017, 06:41:08 PM »
I brought It up a couple of months ago... To Me it's just plane cheating, pardon the pun.  I suggested a wall,  to make it like running into the ground,  Another thought,  Make all planes that do It appear on screen just like it was on radar.

Have any plane that flies off map drop all it's ordnance and fire off all of it's defensive ammunition in X amount of minutes if it does not return to map boundaries.

I'd make flying off the map trigger a killshooter like mode for the bombers where the bomb damage that would have been applied to base objects is in turn applied to the bombers.

damage causes the system message "SYSTEM: You have bombed yourself x times for flying off the map."

Also triggers the hidden achievment "You arrogant ass. You killed us!"

I like the OP's idea of making anyone off the map appear on radar.  Don't know how hard it would be to implement, however.

One consideration though is that on a few maps, strats or bases are very close to the borders of the maps.  The base radar rings even extend past the map borders.  Sometimes in these situations, a buff formation may be extending after a drop and has very little room until the map border is passed.  We already have an arrow marker showing someone is past the map borders which is similar to a sector marker on the clipboard map.  The one issue that has been a problem is that planes outside the map border could not kill one another.  Maybe that has been addressed.  I don't know.  Also, the arrow marking someone past the map border could move in relation to the off map plane giving a vector line to the off map plane's location, but that gives more information than a sector dar bar would.

Agree ... going off the map even with the red indicator lines to me anyway, means the guy is AFK ... or perhaps in a bomber and trying to avoid discovery ... should not be allowed.

Last time this subject came up I suggested that if a plane flies beyond the boundaries of the map it should lose the ability to use a map.  No map, no grid lines, just a black screen inside the pop-up map window.  A pilot intentionally flying outside the boundaries would be left to use a compass and a watch as their only nav tools.

A bomber extending past a bomb run won't be affected all that much since it only requires a 180° course change to get a rough line up for an outbound bombing run.  But the guys who want to use "beyond the map" to hide will have to guess where to turn because they'll have no cue other than what's outside their cockpits to know where they are.

In other games, if you "go out of bounds" (i.e. off map), you are giving a warning that you have so many seconds to turn back or die.  Something similar when you go off map, give the player a warning they have XXX seconds to turn back or they get sent to the tower.

Even better: show the plane type and altitude, as well as the dot.  Bet there would be far less accidental trips off the map.  :aok
