This Sd Kfz 251 was part of Panzergrenadier Division Kurmark, formed in January 1945 mainly from battered units including the Grossdeutschland Division. In April it was positioned on the banks of the Oder river south east of Berlin when the Soviets began their last great offensive of the war designed to capture the city. The understrength German units were quickly cut up and encircled apart from a small detachment of PGD Kurmark who fought their way west to the Elbe river where they surrendered to the American army.
This vehicle was painted in an "ambush" scheme of green, red brown and dark yellow with contrasting dots of these colours. The idea being to make the vehicle harder to see from the air while under the cover of trees. While fairly effective the scheme was time consuming to apply and so rarely used by German vehicle factories.
