Monitor recommendations
« on: December 06, 2017, 08:36:53 AM »
What's the best bang for the buck these days for a 27" - 32" screen? Budget not to exceed $400. My current card is a GTX 760 2 GB but plan to replace with an EVGA GTX 1060 6 GB

Thanks  :aok

With the 1060 card, might want to take a look at this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071HMSZ4S/ref=psdc_1292115011_t3_B00VRKVGSC

We have an ASUS IPS panel in the office and it has worked well.  Colors are vibrant and contrast is exceptional.

It is also a 75Hz vertical refresh rate, which is better than the 60Hz monitors you usually see around, but not quite as good as a 144Hz.  For the price, I think it is a good compromise.

Price for the IPS version is $348; curved is $218.

What does IPS stand for? Anything I should be aware of by going with the curved and saving $130?

Curved monitors only work if you sit directly in front of them.  Move your head to either side a little and the image appears distorted.

IPS is just another type of LCD panel (In Plane Switching).  Tends to have better black levels, which improves contrast and a wider angle of view.

You can find monitors at all kinds of price ranges.

G-sync appears to be going away in favor of an open standard appearing in next generation monitors.  I do not think it is worth the expense, myself.

144Hz is better, sometimes.  The problem with those fast vertical refresh rates is they tend to wash out the colors a bit, unless you are paying more for a quality monitor.

In an IPS panel, 144Hz is tough.  IPS panels tend to smear/ghost a bit more than other types of panels at the same refresh rates.

G-sync monitors are expensive. I read somewhere that manufacturer have to buy the chip/rights from Nvidia to build it into there monitors for about +-100,- Dollars/Euro's. So thats what you pay extra. If you can afford it and have a Nvidia card i would definitely advise it.

If your system reaches 144fps than 144hz is great. It basically shows 144 pictures a second. A lower hz screen like 60hz is only capable to show you 60 pictures a second even if your fps is higher.

The IPS screen Skuzzy advies is very nice. IPS screens tent to have way better true colors than TN panels like mine but are usually cheaper and faster. (lower MS and higher hz)

I got a 1060 card as well but i went for a freesinc monitor (AMD very low licence cost) but is still a great screen and it had a 200 Euro's discount on it when i bought it so i took it. https://www.amazon.com/AOC-AG271QX-Gaming-Monitor-144hz/dp/B01G5JYN0C/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512578931&sr=1-1&keywords=AG271QX   (27inch 144hz 2560x1440 Resolution 1ms)

If Max want to spend a little more than 400 than this is a great alternative.

Edit: for some reason i did not see skuzzy's post above mine .... >.<

Max, unless you have a need for the 6G 1060 the 3G version is more than enough and also runs VR just fine. Will save you some dollars for some other upgrade.

I've gone through the entire line of ROG Swift Monitors now, every one including the first 24" 144hz up to the 34" 100hz, and all the 27" TN and IPS models, as well as the 28" 4k Gsync Acer.  Given the choice, I'd delete the Gsync as IMO it does little overall, and is by far the most expensive option in these new "gaming" monitors out there.

AOC does make a great bang/buck right now panel.  Others too.  If you can find an IPS (my pref as well, unless you're playing pro level FPS games, TN  is inferior to IPS IMO) that has 100 to 165hz but deletes the Gsync, that's your best option if you ask me, based on all the various ones I've had, and I had some of the Acer Predator ROG competitors for a time too (same exact panel and tech, slightly different plastic case and controls is all over the Asus units).

I've been waiting for the new "UQ" 27" 4k 144hz IPS Gsync Asus to come out, delayed until q1 2018.  With better VR coming out, I think it'll be the last expensive gaming LCD I buy, after that it'll be cheaper or TV options I think, as everything I play will be in VR for the most part anyway, negating spending 3 or 4k on several expensive Gsync high hz IPS gaming panels.

Of all the things I advise looking for in a good gaming panel, Gsync is the very bottom of the list.  Just my experience and opinion on how much it matters, it DOES work, but really, in the grand scheme, doesn't mean all that much to me.

I do notice what Skuzzy mentions with high 144/165 hz displays and IPS tech, but for me, it isn't enough of a deal breaker, I much prefer the color and presentation of the IPS over the TN/NA/whatever panels, and also find that the high FPS that a 1060 to 1080ti/Titan can provide make it worth it to have a 100+hz panel.  75 is a bit of an improvement over 60, but I can instantly tell 75 from 100 or 144, and much prefer the higher.

That AOC above is what I'd buy starting over.  Big time.  3 of them.  I may even sell my ROG Swifts if I can get good $ for them, and buy a single 27" 4k Rog Swift 144hz, and 2 of those AOCs for the nephews/nieces machines at our place.

You might see an improvement using Gsync with a system that can't quite run AH at 144Hz+.

It's my understanding that a 144Hz monitor without Gsync would only achieve high refresh rates when the game could render at 144Hz or faster.  If the game renders at 120Hz, the monitor refresh (without Gsync) would be as low as 72Hz.  Gsync enables the monitor to match the render rate of the game, so when the game is rendering at 120Hz the 144Hz monitor would be refreshing at 120Hz.

I've never tried a Gsync monitor, but it seems like it might be useful for some "mid-performance" systems.
