Definition of pain

I am an almost 70 yr old combat infantryman. I have seen my share of death having participated on the ground with a rifle platoon during both phases of the TET offensive in 1968. Nothing but nothing prepared me for 4 o:clock this morning.

My 20 yr old pregnant grandaughter carrying my great-grandson for 23 weeks went abruptly and unexpectantly into pre-term labor. The Doctors could not halt it and my great-grandson was born almost 4 months early. Not enough mature body systems to keep him alive and my grandaughter was told no real chance for survival at less than 20%, and if by a miracle he did survive a pretty well 100% chance he would never leave the hospital.

The pain as a grandfather watching my grandaughter holding this tiny less than a pound and a half infant to her until he drew his last breath in just under an hour is indescribable. She was much stronger than I as I have been reduced to a molten wreck just 11 days before Christmas.

I opened a gofund me for her as she lost her job early in the pregnancy (because of the pregnancy) and her fiance holds a low paying service job.  If anyone wishes to help so she can pay funeral costs that would be great. Otherwise a prayer for heavens newest angel that arrived at their gate early this morning will be greatly appreciated.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your great grandson.  You and your family are in my thoughts.

Financial stress should not be something your granddaughter has to think of at a time like this.  Employment termination due to pregnancy is illegal.  If she can prove that is why she lost her job she has a very strong case against her former employer.

Thank You Karnak.

Her employer tried to block her unemployment claim and messed up during the appeal hearing verifying to the judge they told my granddaughter she was welcome to re-apply for her position after the baby was born. Judge denied their appeal and I am working her to file an EEOC claim.

I am very sorry for your family's loss brother. We also had our son born prematurely at 28 weeks and were fortunate he survived. Four of his neighbours also did not. The cruelty or indifference of nature is at its most confronting in the NICU units with those tiny innocent creatures. I will pray in my own way for that little soul.

Sorry for your loss sir. I was comforted seeing that the funeral home will cover most of the cost for an infant service... Hope you reach your goal to make this time a little easier for you and yours.

 :salute and be strong.

Thank you Sir.
In making the arrangements for my granddaughter I as well was so relieved and surprised at their generosity. Since we took her to a hospital just over the state line they even are travelling to pick up the little guy to bring him to the local facility for her so when she gets home from the hospital she won't have to travel again.

I was born premature as well, and considered much of a miracle. I am sorry for your loss Red, I wish there was more I could do and say to help comfort both of you during this time.

Thank you. I always assumed when you hit great grandparent stage you expect to be immune to the closeness and direct pain of something like this. But, since my wife and I pretty well raised this granddaughter since she was 4 months old, this loss of her baby hit especially hard. Thank you for your kind words.

No amount of physical or time distance can shield you from the pain of a loss of a loved one, especially in a situation such as yours. You have my heartfelt condolences, redcatcher, and your granddaughter also. You will all be in my prayers this Christmas season.

Thank You Copprhed, that's very true. The loss would feel the same anywhere, anytime. I think being there to witness the anguish of the grandaughter we raised as she held the baby against her wishing beyond hope for the impossible for her baby was one of the hardest things i've  seen and i've seen a bit in my years. Thank you for the condolences and prayers.  :salute

Thank You Bug, we will always make room for positives. With 3 daughters, 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild my wife and I can still find plenty of room for the holidays for them within the pain. We just tell the younger ones that heaven needed another Angel for Christmas and find a little peace with that thought.   :salute
