Gaps and Normal Maps
« on: January 04, 2018, 10:15:37 AM »
Does the use of normal mapping require a change in technique regarding the drawing of aileron/elevator gaps, etc.?

I’ve noticed the normal map will create a shine in the gap at certain angles that’s not there without it.

You wouldn't usually have anything drawn for control surface gaps on your normal map as the 3D model generally creates those gaps for you. If you have a 3D model where these gaps do not exist, i.e. a continuous seamless plane between fixed and movable surfaces, then I suppose you might create a dip there on the normal map.

That’s what I’m getting at.   It has a gap, yes, but it looks flush.   So I tried it with the normal map and it looks okay except that from just the right angle you’ll see a reflection.

I guess it is best to delete it and use some trickery to create the effect.

I'd just enhance the hinge line with a drop shadow on the diffuse and maybe also on the specular and environmental maps.

The 109 and 190's have no gaps in the 3D model so I add the same gradient I use for the shadow on the Diffuse map to the Normal map. I've never noticed any odd reflections or glare from those areas.
