Bf 109G-2 "Yellow 9" Jan Reznak 13.(Slovak)/Jg 52
« on: January 10, 2018, 10:51:21 PM »
A lesser known aspect of Luftwaffe operations on the Eastern Front were the actions of the international squadrons using aircraft loaned by the Luftwaffe and attached to standard Luftwaffe fighter groups. Jg 52's 13th squadron was an all Slovak unit which was attached to II Gruppe/Jg 52 from October 1942 until the fall of 1943. Initially equipped with 109E's, the unit struggled to achieve success. But early in 1943, they received current G-2 and G-4 model 109's and quickly began to rack up victories over the Soviet forces in the Kuban region with 154 confirmed kills by July and 215 in total. The squadron's top ace was 24 year old Jan Reznak with 32 confirmed victories.

This skin represents a plane that Reznak achieved 7 of those kills with. "Yellow 9" features the colors of the Slovak flag on the spinner and cowling with non-standard camouflage, both common features of SLovak 109's.

WOW  :x

Love the non-standard camo on the engine cowl panels.   Just in time for the Kuban scenario, too!   Absolutely brilliant, Devil!

Looks great Greebo! What's the story behind the camo only on certain parts of the engine cowling and fuselage?

Very nice work.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

I'll take the Greebo bit as an extra compliment.  :devil

I'm not sure of the exact reason for the cowl camouflage. It certainly was not unique to this squadron, but it does seem to be a trait seen with more frequency than in other squadrons. Some cowlings even featured polka-dots in yellow or light blue.

Here a link to some great info on the planes and pilots of 13.(Slovak)/Jg 52:
https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/letka-13-also-known-as-13-slow-jg-52.17682/page-3

The fuselage pattern in this case follows closely to the factory specs for a 109 built the the WNF factory. All 109's until mid-late '44 were painted without stencils and the colors and coverage of the mottle will vary from plane to plane, but generally will be close to the examples in the following link.
