Arlington is running out of room. Do they need to change eligibility requirements again ?

It's the unfortunate byproduct of any burial ground.

There will have to be a second national cemetery at some point.

There are many national cemeteries. Arlington is just the most well known.

There is so much wasted space at Arlington. The place is laid out in sections so each time there's another war, you get another section. Good for organization but bad for use of space. If you google map it and look you'll see lots of space. The most I notice is the space between the curb of the roads and the first grave you come to. That in itself is about 15 or 20 feet of empty space. There's also the space between graves.  The headstones are so far apart you could bury twice as many by filling the space in between individual graves.

I've seen a couple of national cemeteries where they limit it to cremains only. Graves are pretty darn close since they only need enough space for the headstone to cover the small hole dug for the urn or use of a mausoleum.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Forgive my ignorance... But why not go down deeper and turn them into crypts instead of going out wider to have more grass. . .

My father (a pony pilot in WW2) is buried at Arlington but he when he was alive, he
always said he would like to buried in Montgomery, Al
His burial was out of my hands so you can blame brother and sister for
using up a space at Arlington  :o

Dig out some caves, go multi-layer catacombs.  Put in some nifty Indiana Jones style traps too just to mess with the future graverobbers.  Scatter some teasing valuables behind some fake walls near the entrance, and you'll have ten thousand years of graverobbers going through there grave by grave looking for the loot :)

Seriously, they should start digging now.  Plenty of room if they make multi-layer tunnels and caves.  The extra dirt they dig out can be used up on top so they can go up one more layer too.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

My father was Korean War / Cold war vet, we asked him about being buried at Arlington. Dad said no, he'd like to see that reserved for the "other guys" I think what he meant was guys that died in battle / during an active war, but he wouldn't expand on his thoughts. Hes resting comfortably at the military cemetery at  Ft.Indiantown Gap here in PA, close to his family, and one of his duty stations.

Cremation.

Coogan

They actually do cremation and then bury the ashes. My wife's grandfather was buried there in 2011. It was a beautiful ceremony.

I was not being sarcastic.   :salute
I bet it was a beautiful ceremony.  We had a cremation done for my dad & brother when they passed.

So are there bodies in the graves or just ashes?
