Bf 110E flown by Walter Ehle, group commander of II/NJG 1 in June of 1942. Ehle was one the Luftwaffe's longest serving group leaders , commanding II Gruppe from October 1940 until his death in an landing mishap November 18, 1943. 35 of his 39 total victories were scored at night and this scheme depicts his aircraft after his 6th night victory, 9th overall. The 9 kill markings on the tail have the roundels of the victim's nationality, the first 2 being Poland and the other 7 England. The green markings were common on command aircraft in the Bf 110 ranks and reference photos indicate a slightly darker color for the individual aircraft code letter "A" over the usual light gray markings. The result is a strikingly colorful scheme for a night fighter.
