In April 1942 the 72 kill ace Wolfgang Spate was recalled from front line duties on the Eastern Front with JG 54 and made commander of Erprobungskommando 16, the test unit for the Me 163 rocket fighter. Two years later with the new fighter nearing operational status he was recalled to his old squadron but before leaving decided to give the 163 its operational debut. In honour of the occasion his ground crew painted his aircraft bright red overnight. Spate was not happy about this but took off to intercept an approaching US bomber formation. He was unable to complete the intercept due to engine problems and ordered his plane to be repainted in camouflage colours. Returning to JG54 Spate raised his score to 99 kills by the war's end and later wrote two books on his experiences with the 163.
