Another nice find: Unfired S&W Model 39-2
« on: February 20, 2018, 08:20:32 AM »
I just can't say no to history as long as the firearm is made out of steel and wood, because in 100 years, it won't be a recycled water bottle.  :old:

I picked this one up last week and shot it yesterday. Unbelievable groups. It gave the CZ75 PCR a run for it's money.

Developed in 1954, S&W was looking for a pistol that could compete with the M1911A1 in the Army field trials. The -39 was America's first US-made double action semi automatic pistol with spirits of the Walther P-38 mechanics and the M1911A1 frame design.

It failed to capture the attention of the Army back then but 9mm ammunition was no where near as powerful as today 9mm ammunition.

After being rejected by the Army, S&W made the Model 39 available commercially.

The Model 39 was originally manufactured commercially with an anodized aluminum frame, a curved backstrap and a blued carbon steel slide that carried the manual safety. There were very few manufactured  with a steel frame and those are highly sought after firearms by collectors.

The grip was of three pieces made of two walnut wood panels joined by a metal back strap. It has a magazine release located at the rear of the trigger guard, similar to the M1911A1 it was designed to replace. It also used a conventional slide, barrel bushing, slide arrangement as opposed to the exposed barrel arrangement of the P38. Features common to its cousin , the Walther P38 were mechanics such as a de-cocking safety that disconnected the trigger and hammer. Also in common with the German P38 was the 8-round single-stack magazine and added a magazine catch cutout to it.  These pistols have a frame lanyard loop.

At 11 ozs. less than the 1911 A-1, the compact 9 mm seemed to offer exactly what a covert operator needed in a sidearm so they made a version for the Navy Seals that had a 14 round capacity.

The commercial Model 39 went on to some improvements thus the Dash 2 was created. This S&W pistol was manufactured from 1955 until 1982. The last pistol was shipped in Jan 1983.

This particular firearm pictured below I received today. It was made in 1981. The seller did not know if it had been fired and upon inspection by my gunsmith and myself, it was determined that this firearm has never been fired and actually needs a complete degreasing! Bonus to the auction win!

It came with the original box, all the paper work including an extra magazine, just as they were shipped!
Very happy with this purchase.

Great addition to your collection. I am on the search for a nice SxS 20ga. Also on my list is a replacement for my Quarter Circle 10 .45 PCC. My brother shot it this weekend with his new suppressor and said he will not be returning it to me.

I like the looks of the older S&W semi's. I had the misfortune to try a couple of their larger caliber version, the 645. If you find one, it looks very similar to the 39 only in stainless and larger due to the .45 caliber. They were "reliable" but both of the ones I tried shot far low. I'm talking 8 to 10" low from point of aim at 7 to 10 yards. Farther out it just got worse. I got rid of them as fast as I could and never looked back.

That's one sweet looking S&W you picked up by auction win!  Just guessing but if you don't mind what was the winning price? $1,200 to $1,400?

Do you use GunBroker a lot for auctions? Have you ever tried any of the NRA auctions?

I got (2) S-by-S 20 GA shotguns ... One is an older model Stevens with my initials wood burned into the side right where the  Butt stock meets the breech/triggers assembly both  barrels are full choke.... The other one was a gift my Dad gave to my grandpa that was left to me when he passed...

My all-time favorite shotguns were my Winchester model 101 field grade O/U 12 GA with 2 sets of barrels first set was skeet/trap second set was modified/ IC which I seldomly ever used ( I was given this gun at 12 yrs old and was on the FFA skeet shooting team in highschool for 3 years and 1st alternate my 4th year (I lost the last spot on the team doing a shoot off... I hit 124 out of 125 pigeons, Scotty went 125 for 125....

My  2nd favorite gun was an old  Brazil made Kmart special single shot 20 GA that Dad picked up at the flea market one November Saturday for $35.00... It was full choke 24"  barrel.....

That night we took it to the Turkey shoot and I won 3 turkeys and 2 hams, Dad won 1 each turkey and ham....

They claimed we were cheating several times and they even checked the gun 3 times to make sure that it was legal, then they were trying to buy the gun for the house gun offering upwards of $200  but we refused to sell it..... One of the funniest and hilarious things Ive ever seen at a turkey shoot... All those guys being po'ed because that short little 20 GA was putting all those 32" to 36" goose gun 12 GAs to shame....

Sorry for ranting....got caught up in a memory, heh

Side note: has any of you owned or fired a Walther Creed 9mm?

Any of you done any business with CDNN Sports       www.cdnnsports.com

This one below is NOT mine. On Sunday, one just like it sold for $978 (Total $1124 with the 15% commission.  :uhoh

I paid $620 for this one a week ago. My top bid for over a year in similar auctions while stalking this particular model has been $600 but I just couldn't say no any longer. Thus $620 was my winning bid on Gunbroker. ;)

I use Gunbroker or local gun shops/pawn shops for purchases. Or estate sales.
I've used Grab-a-gun too. I once did a very low ball bid on a 98% Colt 1908 Vest Pocket pistol on Rock Island Auction and it won!
I've never used CDNN or Bud's Gun Shop although I have friends that have, and no issues.

I've never fired a Walther Creed. The only Walther I own is a P38.
