No worries Bustr,

It’s easier for me to start off with the basic shapes of all large geo features on import and sculpt down to the smaller features. It will also help me approximate object placement elevations without having to sculpt out the surrounding areas to make the object appear as natural as possible with the least amount of work.

This will also help me streamline the texture painting over large areas and elevations freeing me up to focus on transitional blending during the back side of development.

When I make a terrain from the 16bit raw, the map only shows the central 1/2 of the area.  The whole 4096x4096 pixel area of the .raw is included in the terrain, but the map only shows the center.

So, when you generate the clipboard map, it only shows the central half of your terrain?

Click on "Settings" then "Terrain Settings" and then adjust the clipboard map size to "256" or "512". Build your clipboard map again and see if the issue has resolved itself.

Are you building a 20x20 or 10x10 sector terrain? For the SEA arenas 20x20 is still used for historical venues, the MA is now down to 10x10 becasue of our numbers. A 512 map is for a 20x20 and a 256 is for a 10x10. That is a port hole effect for viewing your terrain and giving you the boarders long hand for 20x20, 10x10 and so forth. The center 2048x2048 of the 4096x4096 project space is a 10x10 terrain.

So, the .raw file should be 4096x4096, but only use the center 2048x2048 for a 10x10 terrain?

4096x4096 is the real total work space of the terrain editor polymesh. When you decide to make a smaller terrain you choose a smaller map size which port holes the 4096x4096 work space. Then when you run a build and run around on that offline to test it, the CBM map defines the porthole or terrain size that will be shown. But, no matter how small your CBM map porthole and terrain size, the project space is a 4096x4096 area called the "terrainname.res" file.

Set your map to 64x64 and include grid lines and produce a map.bmp. Open it in an art program and see what the sector numbers are. The center of the project space is the focus point of all terrain sizes. On my 10x10 I place a solid boarder just outside of the porthole to keep things contained. Cuts down on hiding CV's since one terrain builder long ago used a bug in that feature so he could lock CV's away from the other countries by placing them in limbo. Funny how players eventually discover things like that and tell Hitech about it..... :)

Yes, but normally it's referred to as a 256 mile terrain following the convention of the Terrain Settings dialog in the editor.
