After-Action Report: "Fortress Europe" MA #2 Mission (04/07/2018, 2000 hours CDT)
Game Map was NDISLES
Mission was created with B17/B24s, 75% fuel, 12x500lb bombs launching from A37. P51D/P47M with 100% fuel and droptanks were set to launch from A38.
Knights launched seven B-17 formations from A37 (6.9.4) and proceeded to climb northeast. Meanwhile, two escorts (p51D, P38L) launched from A38 and climbed northeast. Buffs turned due east and met up with the escorts in the 9.9.1 area; target alt was 23K to take advantage of a tail wind. Two other escorts arrived to boost our total fighter support to four. After going level and forming up, we were engaged by several Rook Fw190s, but our escorts were for the most part able to drive them away. We first hit the Rook AAA in sector 11.9.9 and reduced its effectiveness to 24% (not sure what it was operating at before our attack). More Rooks joined the fray and after the drop we turned north towards the Bishop AAA factory in the 12.13.3 sector. During this leg of the journey, we were thoroughly picked apart as we were lacking fighter protection and a few buffs fell out of formation. By the time we made it to the Bishop AAA, only two B17 singles were able to get their bombs off. They were destroyed soon thereafter, but the Bishop AAA was ultimately reduced from 41% to 39% effectiveness.
During the raid, we encountered at least 16 Rooks and six Bishops. Of these, there were: one Bf-109G, two Fw-190A8s, two Fw-190Ds, one La-7, one me-163, three me-262s, one Mossie, one P51B, six P51Ds, three Ta-152s, and one Tempest. By my film review, nine of these enemy planes were confirmed to be destroyed in addition to a couple more forced from the fight with damage.
Fire/explosions seemed to be the leading cause of death for our buffs. Our precious few fighter escorts lacked the fuel to make it all the way to the second target. Good times were had by all, there were instances where our buffs looked like the APUs on the Matrix Revolutions going back-to-back and our guns a blazin'. I won't be able to make it this coming weekend, but I highly suggest you don't miss out next time.
