A way to end D1.2 shots by shorter tracer endurance
« on: May 22, 2000, 06:58:00 AM »
I remember reading tracers only lasted a 1.5 seconds or so.
but we have tracers burning from 2.5 to 3 seconds in AH all the way out to d1.2 or so.

perhaps if tracers burned out after 1.5 seconds while guns were still capable of their historic ranges?

is this a good idea or another bad one like my other ideas?

Who makes the 1.2 shots anyways?  Tonight I let you have it from 1.1 and I could only get one ping out of about 250 rounds.

well it would affect all the long range shooting I guess,
like d700 shots on I think the tracers would burn out by then ?

Silat was kind enough to run some tests in TA with me, he flew D1.2 (shown on his FE) and D1.1 on mine, I flew an aircraft with 4-20mm cannon and I easily shot him down.  When I went to review the film, it was all blacked out..anyone know why  I can't view it?  Conspiracy? hehe.

I've got loads of tracer info, albeit for modern ammo. From what I have, a single .50 caliber APT [armor piercing tracer] burns for between 1.4 and 1.8 seconds. As a reference, a 660 grain .50 BMG round will travel 3,080 feet in a single second. That distance is given for API ammo, not APT. Why? I have no idea, it's the way the reference page is printed.

I got a translation of a finnish pilot manual for the 109G-6. Some of the numbers seem a bit odd, with for instacne different tracer distance with the same endurance and round weight, but it gives a overview over the different types of tracers.

"The MG 151 cannon can use the following ammunition:

1. Practise Round, 115g.
2. Armor-piercing Incendiary Round, 117g.
3. Armor-piercing Incendiary Round, 115g.
4. Explosive Round, 115g, 1.4 sec tracer ca. 750m.
5. Explosive Round, 115g, 1.4 sec tracer self-igniting at ca. 750m.
6. Incendiary Explosive Round, 115g, [3].3 sec tracer ca. 1200m.
7. Incendiary Explosive Round, 115g, 3.3 sec tracer ca. 1300m.

In the MG-131 machine gun, the following ammunition can be used:

1. Incendiary Explosive Round, 34g, 1.7 sec tracer ca. 750m.
2. Armor-piercing Round, 38.5g, 1.7 sec tracer ca. 650m.
3. Explosive Round, 34g, without tracer.
4. Explosive Round, 34g, 1.7 sec tracer ca. 650m.
5. Armor-piercing Explosive Round, 38.5g, 1.7 sec tracer ca. 750m.
6. Armor-piercing Round, 38g, 2.5 sec tracer ca. 750m. [typo at either tracer endurance or distance???]
7. Explosive Round, 34g, 1,7 sec. tracer self-igniting at ca. 700m."
