Looking for Advice
« on: May 09, 2018, 01:47:54 PM »
Hi All,

Just a quick question. My mobo is an older intel i7950 processor. Its an evga 141-gt-e770-a1,x58 class 3.

I in the past have been fond of amd vga's.I have just tried a rx580black ....did'nt work...don't know if it was the mobo, vga, or something else(not going into a long convoluted explanation),sent back ,refunded. My current vga has no prob running (readon 5970black) even re-installing. I want to try a gtx 1070, but i think its to much for the i7950.

Im thinking that the gtx1060ssc is about the best choice (really thinking about getting this one)but is a crapshoot 50/50 with this older processor.

Wadda youse think yes no or maybe.

If you're curious, the prob I had with the 580 was...random shutdown of comp,no blu scrn.the computer would run kinda ok for email, some streaming ,but for gaming, even aces ,after a few sec(30-40)shutdown city.DCS,EFTarkov, etc all the same. I had no problems before the new vga, I just wanted to start upgrading ,and after reinstalling the old card no problems at all. At first I thought it was a pwr supply or memory problem. But after reinstalling the vga,and doing a frickin long prettythang memtest, with no shutdowns, i cant see a pwr sup problem.

So there it is...do you think the 1060 ssc will be ok? What about the 1070? my first choice would be the 1070,but i could live with the 1060

Tks to All,
Dyna

The 580 needs a pretty good size power supply.  Sounds like you were running short of power to it.

What power supply is in the computer (brand/model)?

As Skuzzy said, the 580 is very power thirsty. According to some reviews even a half more than Nvidia's 1080, or turned the other way round, the 1080 runs with a third less juice.

For most games your current processor won't be the bottleneck even with the 1070. The 1060 is also a good choice if you're not going past 1080p @ 60Hz.

Thanks for the quick response,

Pwr sup is an Corsair 1000w  #hale90-1000-m.

And yes I am currently running triple monitors @1080p

ran this way for many years as I have said. And as of this writing I am running triple monitors 1080p 60hz no prob, it has been at least a week since reinstalling my 5970, and not a flaw since.

Thnanks again,
Dyna

So you dont think the 1070 will be bottlenecked hmmm. Thats good to hear,I will have to research some on a few new games i like. I guess the newer games are more cpu dependant for lack of a better word (novice here) like Post Scriptem or hell let loose.

just trying to get a few more years outta my mobo before i have to bite the proverbial bullet.

I owe ya a cold one
