You know it's time to retire when....
« on: May 16, 2018, 02:46:02 PM »
Well, that’s a wrap folks in 4 days from now but I'll be on vacation. My last day in the office is tomorrow.

Since 1979 the Boeing Company provided me many career opportunities.

I had 7 careers spanning 33 service years with the company enduring 1 lay-off, 2 warn notices, 2 Union strikes.

In chronological  order—Bench mechanic , Machinist, Jig Builder, (’79-81) Flat pattern Template maker, NC programmer/Tool Designer, Engineering Application Analyst (CATIA V4 and V5) and finally an IT Project Manager. (’87-’18)

My hands and brain have touched the 707, 727, 737, 747, 767, 767 Tanker, Plane “581” (Stealth B2 Bomber), 777, and 787 airplane programs in one job or another.

Many people who had faith in me where I had little, gave me those opportunities.

And now it’s time to move onto the next phase of my life with my wife Laura (Who retires at 55 years old next year).  I’ve really enjoyed my careers and I feel blessed having had worked with a bunch of brilliant folks at the Boeing company.

You know it's time to retire when....
You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.

You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.

Your IM’ing on Lync with your co-worker who works at the desk next to you.

When you go home after a long day at work you still answer the phone in a business manner.

Contractors out number permanent staff and are more likely to get longevity awards.

When you pray that your computer will get the blue screen of death so you have an honest excuse to leave work early.

When you arrive late at the office, but then make up for it by leaving early.
Your address book has mostly names that start with Dr

Getting "lucky" means you remember where you left your car in the car park.

Everything hurts, and what doesn't hurt; doesn't work.

The font type I used to read this print out is twice that of my IQ.

You have more hair in your ears and nose than on your head.

You try to straighten out the wrinkles in your socks and discover you aren't wearing any.

You listened to this entire list, and kept nodding and smiling.

And the number 1 reason for knowing when it’s time to retire is….when you don’t trust your farts anymore.

Congrats, Rip. Hope to be only about a year and change behind you! Can't wait until my week regularly consists of 6 Saturdays and a Sunday. :) And yeah, I'm nodding to most of those, dang it! :old:

I'll bet it is! When you're hobbies become more time intensive than your job, it's time to retire.

Congratulations, Rip!   Now enjoy yourself, you've earned it.

Just curious, what was your favorite occupation among the seven you had?

Thanks oboe!
The most challenging and favorite was a "Cradle to Grave" NC programmer/tool designer. We would get a work order with an Engineering blueprint of an aircraft part, we would have to reverse engineer it, flat pattern templates, hydroform blocks, routing tools for the profile, drill jigs for drilling holes. One aircraft part could have as many as 5 tools to make it, and we got to design these, then create the NC programs for the machines to cut them out. My most challenging NC Program was a 5 axis program that roughed/finished the prototype steering wheel for the 777.

My highest paying job was what I'm doing now (Senior IT project manager)

That sounds pretty cool, I can see what that would be a favorite.  Congrats again!

Welcome to the world of retirement, where you can sleep in any time you want and every day is Saturday except for Sunday.  :old:
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."
