30 mm effects
« on: May 23, 2018, 03:21:06 PM »
Flying a K4 coming up behind a Lanc 8oo yards out, firing guns, impact sprites, out of ammo. Lanc doesn't even smoke. Is there something going on with the 30 mm ammo??  :headscratch:

You'd have to see film from the lanc to find out.

Were you firing MGs as well?  Might've been MG hit sprites.  At 800 yards, 30mm dispersion is akin to silly string at 20 feet.  And if your MGs were what was hitting the lanc, the 30mm were several feet below what your MGs were hitting.

The German 30mm muzzle velocity is only 1770 fps, which is slow. Even if you set it at 650 yard's, at that distance it will have lost so much speed it will be dropping like a bank safe.

To really see the effect of that shell dropping, set up the "target" in the offline practice area ( .target 800 000) - this would put a target at 800yards true north from your plane (and it will stay there).

Now fly, aim right at the middle of the target and fire your machine guns. Notice where they hit. Now fire the 30mm. It MAY not even hit the target...

Were the hits on the fuselage or the wing? Lancs can sometimes shrug off a few taters to the fuselage.

Tough call without film. 800 back is really far. Where did they hit?

My advice is to come from above and in front of them to to shoot in their cockpit or wings as you get closer. Takes more patients, but not too bad in a K4 vs a lanc.

Shooting from dead 6 to any plane is literally the worst place to shoot from in a K4.

Check your convergence.

Ive found against buffs take your time and get some alt to get high and in front/side. Then do a slashing attack and fire off the taters at point blank range. Makes it hard for them to hit you and maximizes the damage of your relatively small ammo load. Biggest threat is not ramming one of the drones.

Jimmy, come fly K4's with us in the "Fjord Fury" scenario in June.  :aok

There will be plenty of Lancasters to shoot down.

We love having more players join us, whether or not you've flown in a scenario before.

Out of curiosity I created a test terrain where I can spawn the majority of planes we shoot forward fixed guns with onto a bench stand leveled relative to the horizontal center line of the offline target. Then on zoom I can watch where my rounds hit at different ranges.

Here is the K4 with the MK108 30mm set at the game default convergence of 250 at 800, 600, 400, 200. Each ring of the target is 10ft wide. Screen capture is not that great for individual pixels so if you really want to see the dispersion just sit on a runway and pull up the target, go to full zoom and blast away. It's impressive to pull that target back to 25-50 yards to get the full impact of just how wide the dispersion area is.

The bench stand and you can see the plane center line for the blast tube lines up with the target.

800yds, the dark area just above the first tick mark is the impact area about 30ft low and wider than that to each side.

600yds, the dark area 10ft low is the impact and dispersion is about 20ft to each side. Screen capture does not get it all.

400yds, about 1ft low but the dispersion is about 10ft to a side.

200yds, dead on and the dispersion is about a 10ft diameter circle.

Absolutely.  We love having folks show up on game day as "walkons" as well.  Please do show up if you are available one of the weekends.  :aok
