This Spitfire Mk XVI was part of 322 (Dutch) Squadron while based in Holland in 1945. On January 28th it was lost along with its pilot F/Sgt C. Kooy during an attack on a German held Villa Ruiter Berg in Doorn. It is likely it got caught in the explosion of the preceding Spit's bombs. As well as the orange triangle symbols common to all the Dutch RAF planes it had nose art depicting the squadron mascot, a grey parrot named Polly. This parrot later formed the centre of the squadron's RAF badge and the same art is still used by the Dutch Air Force's F-16-equipped 322 Squadron today.
