Salute to F4F's that never say die!
« on: June 23, 2018, 08:32:17 AM »
A salute to the tenacity of a group of F4F's that made a second attack on the Axis CV.  After the initial CV attacks pretty much all of Axis had logged off except for three or four A6M2's.  About ten minutes prior to the end of the frame 6+ F4F's came in at high alt, shot down the remaining CAP, and strafed the CV till it went down.  It was a suicide run as there was not enough time to return to their CV, but it paid off.  Just goes to show it ain't over till it's over!

That's right...

Only 4 of 14 SBDs got their ordnance off on the CV and we needed one more to have it go down. The IJN CAP got into us pretty good. Well done to the JAP CAP.  :aok

Awesome battle overall.

The CV would also be sunk if the damage model included the high energy impact of an aircraft fuselage coupled with aviation gasoline catching fire.   :devil

I had just called for the guys to turn and run home and land safe and..............somebody says "there it is...burning cv!"
After that we just had to go down there and attack.  If it had been undefended we might have made it home but was not to be.  We were about 5 mins short.

It took a couple of strafing runs from about 5 F4Fs for the record.

Also, from an historic note, a group of 4 B26's carrying torpedos strafed the CVs at the Battle of Midway.  Odd how the game throws up parallels.

I get really really tired of selective realism disguised as a desire to make bombers easier to kill.

Ditto, I was one of the SBDs that got an egg on your carrier. I was promptly shot down immediately after. Watching your video, I found myself rooting for you & cheered when you touched down safe. Thanks for posting the video.
