I was station at Fort Detrick, MD for a while in the service. I worked at the Fredrick, MD airport pumping gas in the evening. Bob Hoover stopped there for gas in his Mustang and as I was talking to him he told me if I wanted I could ride with him in the second seat of the Mustang to Chicago and catch a commercial fight back. As i was in the army I would have had to go AWOL to do it. I have kicked myself ever since for not going ahead and doing the chance of a lifetime to ride with Bob Hoover in his Mustang. After all what could they have done to me send me to Vietnam? I had already been there.  :x

His service record is more impressive than his Shrike stunts.

There’s a color photo of those gals from a different angle.  I think Bob is getting out of the cockpit.  Damn impressive.  Lol

Not sure what the story is on his Mustang catching fire.  I know his first one was damaged by an O2 bottle explosion...

Saw him do it at Reading for a couple of years in a row.  "Awesome" hardly describes it.  What a pilot.

I had the opportunity of seeing Hoover do his routines in the stang and Shrike at an airshow in Tucson when I was a kid. Also saw Duane do his stuff in the Piper Cub. They don't make them like that any more.

Didn't he help "talk down" a mustang in distress only a few years ago?

I heard it was a problem with the landing gear not extending and he suggested rocking the wings aggressively in order to release the uplocks.
