Wireless Mouse Cursor

I’ve got a wireless mouse that has worked perfectly for several years. 

Over the last couple of months the mouse cursor has randomly frozen after the desktop loads.  I discovered that if the mouse transmitter USB cable is unplugged from the back of the computer (USB 3.0) for a few seconds and plugged back in, it operates normally for hours. Most of the time after desktop loadup, the mouse/cursor works normally.

Any idea what is causing this random event?

Might even be USB3. Try USB2 if you have one free.

I had this exact issue happen a few times. One was because of a USB hub that was in the process of dying, the other was another USB device that would randomly interfere. It was either trying to say it was supposed to be a mouse or another reason but thats too far back to remember

Mine is plugged into a USB 3 on the back of the computer.

Do you have another mouse and USB thing to try to see if that one might be acting up?

It sounds to me like the Mouse USB transmitter is failing. It is no longer recognizing the USB "ping" for a better word seeing if it is still there/connected. It will however reset on a plug and play instance when you unplug and replug the unit it.

All things fail eventually. I just may be time for a new one.

I have a similar issue with my win10 laptop,every so ofter the wireless mouse just quits,unplugging and plugging the usb transmitter fixes it.


  I think it's win10's power management doing it but I could be wrong

Unplugging was working.  But, it started happening every time I turned the computer on vs randomly.  It occurred to me to put a new set of batteries in the mouse.  That solved the problem.  The mouse batteries usually last several months but, this pair went bad after a couple of months.

the bluetooth receiver could be going out, the USB port version could be wrong, the Bluetooth transmitter on the mouse could be going bad as well.

I would move this device to another machine and see what it does. doing this will give is more info to work with.

I don’t have another computer to move it to.  So far, the fresh mouse batteries seem to have solved the problem.

The mouse batteries usually last several months but, this pair went bad after a couple of months.

Did you check the best before date of the old batteries? If you didn't know, they really do have a limited shelf life. Even worse, they might show proper voltages on a multimeter despite failing in regular use.

Another issue is that there's a vast dispersion in quality between brands. In tests the big names have often performed worse than the cheaper ones branded by a big a big market chain - which actually might be because they get bought sooner after manufacturing.
