How many use VR?
« on: October 13, 2018, 03:37:37 PM »
and if not now, who plans to use it in the next 12 months?

For those using it, what are the pros and cons?

I tried it for a while.  It is ok but not great.

Pro:
  • Immersion is fun

Cons:
  • Resolution / clarity is poor.
  • Seeing to the rear is difficult unless you use hat switch to look around.

People will give you advise about using a swivel chair to help looking back.  I have a swivel chair and sure, I can swivel and look back but it is not workable if you also want to use your pedals etc.

quite a few since the good old days of just me :)

You lose screen resolution, but you gain an immense amount of immersion in the game. Stereoscopic 3D gives you better depth perception, and the head tracking means you can really take advantage of the views. As you play in VR you start get the feel for difference in aircraft sizes and in particular the views you can get.

Going back to non-VR after playing VR for years is very very difficult.

People who get motion sickness shouldn't try VR.

I go between TrackIR and no trackIR. I would love to try the VR stuff, but with the state of the game these days I cant justify blowing that kind of money. I wish the game was going strong with a few hundred players on line every night. Id jump right on over. Seeing as this is the only game I play, Im not going to waste the money....... yet  :)

I use the Oculus Rift and absolutely love it.  The immersion is awesome.  The graphics and some aspects of SA suffer, while others improve.  I hardly notice canopy obstructions in the rift; it is so easy to see around them.  I think it has helped my gunnery, and it is easier to see what your opponent is doing in a dogfight.....unless you lose sight of him, then I find it is harder to see bandits from some angles.  Bottom line:  I'd have a hard time not flying with VR now!   :aok

I love VR for flying and use a hat switch to overcome the rear view issue.  Track IR for GVing to take advantage of better visual acuity amongst the bushes and trees.

I have a Acer headset - picked it up for a couple hundred (actually picked up 2) and what you loose in visual quality you get from a monitor view, you gain 10-fold in situational awareness and immersion.  It’s addictive actually - I can’t fly Aces High without it anymore.
It’s the difference of riding a 100cc moped in the burbs in the rain vs a 1600cc Harley Fatboy in a May farm road in Kentucky on a warm sunny day.

I’ve had the Oculus Rift too, liked the Acer more - better video quality.

I use it some times in AH....

But 100% of the time in IRACING. AH isn't just isn't to that level of  playability at this time time. The map looks jacked up and hard to use, the texted box is in the way or you move it out of the way and it feels odd to look at. AH is still better with triple monitors.

Occulus Rift, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! As mentioned the Resolution suffers, but I hardly notice it anymore. Gving though...different story. Like Puma stated...TIR for this..well anything other than M3,Wirb and NON Armored Combat.Armored best to use TIR.   I bought the ACER Headset, same as MR FORK has..didnt like it as much as Rift. Could let you have it on the CHEAP, BBQsam! I really just didnt like the Windows Mixed Reality and through STEAM deal. Just holler if you are interested...goes for anybody it still in box, been used 15 minutes(Aprox)

I don't use vr goggles and don't plan to.

They should have added or updated more planes instead of a vr pilot I'll fly with once and then turn off.

Tried TrackIR for a while, then gave up.  I have a much better sense of the aircraft attitude from the fixed head positions of the hat switch views.

I'm with TIR and improving my controllers. Added Crosswinds pedals and a VKB stick the last couple of years, eventually <sic> they'll come out with a throttle and after that I'll maybe set my sights on VR. TIR works for me. I have the video card to run VR but I'm waiting on them to get a couple of steps further into development. Better resolution, lighter weight, reliable sound. Like that.

The only other thing that bugs me about VR is that it hasn't been around long enough for any data regarding any associated potential eyesight problems. Maybe I'm overthinking it, and I know the whole thing is an optical illusion, but I worry about how focusing my eyes on a screen physically a couple of inches from my actual eyeballs for hours on end will affect my already terrible eyesight over time! I wear glasses at night when I'm flying so if using a rift there's another expense associated with that just for the lenses.

VR-Occulus......great immersion........lousy resolution along with an awkward interface that for me ruins what could be amazing.......expensive and now sitting in the closet gathering dust........ :old:
