Garand question

Anyone have any experience with Garand Gear's ported gas plug http://www.garandgear.com/ported-gas-plug.html? I'm fussing with a cycling issue and was thinking this might help.

I have never had an issue...that being said..THIS WOULD cause an issue. Almost same in AR type Gas rings(little indents need to be spaced correctly)..only an issue after wear and boarder line cleaning in my experiences. One of those OOPS, forgot to get that adjusted/cleaned. :uhoh

I have one but very limited experience.  I had installed the plug but then also used the "Garand specific" ammo which loaded to WWII pressures. I didn't need both, it would fire, eject but didn't have quite enough oomph to chamber the next round.  I was not able to return to the range.

What issue are you having?

i Have 2 Garands (Springfield and an International Harvester) what issue are you having? Cycling issues and Want to try higher pressure factory ammo instead of M2 Ball? I will say the Garand Gears plug works very well, I had a third Garand that had one....I got it because I got a great deal on 2k rounds of 150 Core Lokt...functioned flawlessly and the op rod was just fine

Rifle will fire for awhile just fine, perhaps 20-30 rounds.  Then the bolt will jam shut on an unfired cartridge.  It takes quite a bit of force to open it, and of course quite a bit of care since there's an unfired round in the chamber.  This is using the Greek ammo from CMP.

Could be any number of things, of course, and I haven't had much opportunity to test it after making a few simple modifications.  But I came across the replacement gas port and thought it might be an option in any event.

I have the variable gas port on a Garand and set it to the particular ammo recipe that I loaded for it. My process was to set it way open then close it slowly until the action cycled reliably with the load. I then locked it down. No issues with it since then.

Your issue seems to be more ammo related. Is it clean? No corrosion on the cases? Is the chamber rough? Lastly is the op rod straight or slightly bent out of specs?

I would start over and set up the gun for it if you have a substantial amount of it to burn up. I am suspect of old ammo (40+ years and WW2 surplus) due to degradation of the powder and primer given the iffy storage it likely had over time. I am not really experienced with the Greek surplus either. I just load up my own Garand ammo, especially since I had it converted to 7.62 NATO by Springfield Armory a few years back. The 308 stuff is much easier /cheaper to find now, even surplus and it nowhere as old as the 30-06 surplus.

All good questions.  Clean it is.  Chamber seems bright.  Hope it doesn't turn out to be the operating rod, because those are quite expensive.  I'm thinking that possibly the recoil had moved the forend enough to partially block the gas port, so that the cycle wasn't far enough back.  Ammunition quality was one of my thoughts, but internet posters seem to be happy with the Greek stuff.  I'm ordering some Creedmoor M1 loadings to compare. 

Now I need a day alone to test it all out.  I find such days are increasingly rare.
