One good reason NOT to add submarines to Aces High
« on: March 23, 2019, 12:49:28 PM »
I've always liked the idea of submarines in AH, I really liked Silent Service on the C-64  :old: heck maybe that was even my first PC   really  :old: :old:
Anyway it depends on the level of accurcy I suppose but here is a reason I found not to include submarines, at least the type described.

No worries, as long as food isn't modeled we're all set.

Hitech & Pyro held a Q&A at one of the AH Cons...back around 2002. I asked about subs, suggesting it would be a great addition for numbskulls like me, who stink at air combat  :joystick:

Pyro said that subs were a definite possibility while Dale mentioned his dad as a WW2 submariner and seemed kinda jazzed about the idea though there was much more pertinent stuff to be worked on first.

Hope springs eternal  :old:

Imagine how hilarious. You're the ultimate U-boat kapitan. You've been stalking a CV for hours at your max speed of what? 17 kts on the surface or like 7 submerged? Guessing. I don't know exactly but that's pretty close I think. But--you know what you're doing and are in prefect position for a glorious kill! Just as you're lining up the torp shot a formation of B-24s flies over and splashes the ships. After all that time lol!

And you're staring at what's left.

Sailing away. Not like you could chase em down!

Yeah that sounds like a blast!

Barges! If you add subs you could add merchant shipping which would also be additional torpedo/bomber/strafing targets.

No worries, as long as food isn't modeled we're all set.

USN submarines traditionally serve the best food in the U.S. military. But then, you're probably talking about the Kriegsmarine.  ;)

No, I was just playing along with Fuzeman's joke about the poor toilets in early subs.

I caught that. Good or bad food, that's a bad situation.  :(

If the cartoon pilot's personal hygiene were an issue in AH we would not have the WW1 arena either. The castor oil used to lubricate the engines evaporated and when inhaled in the open cabin the fumes worked as a laxative - which HiTech has confirmed. The long scarf served as a filter as well as for wiping the goggles.

Wouldn't that just smear?

Yep, it smears your intestines so slippery that nothing can be held inside.

When they first announced AH3 there was a video of water uploaded to youtube.

We might see a periscope going up one of these days.  :D
