This A-20G flew as part of the 422nd Night Fighter Squadron based in England and later France during 1944. Apart from defensive night fighter patrols this squadron's A-20Gs were sometimes armed with bombs and sent on nocturnal intruder sorties against enemy installations. Like all 9th Air Force night fighters its factory olive drab and neutral gray paint scheme was repainted with gloss Jet black following an Air Force directive in February of that year. The glossy finish not only gave less drag but was also less visible from the ground when the aircraft was caught in searchlights.
