This Spitfire Mk IX was the regular mount of 11 kill ace Flt. Lt. Desmond Ibbotson of 601 Squadron RAF from July 1944 until his death in November in a flying accident. During this period the squadron was based in Italy and often employed on ground attack missions. Unusually his Spitfire had most of its paint stripped to a natural metal finish, apart from the RAF markings and an anti-glare area ahead of the cockpit.
